Can Neifi be traded before the June 15 deadline w/o his consent? If he wants to start and doesn't, maybe we can all hope he will be used in a trade to a team that will give him a starting role.

Good question. I'm not sure if he filed and if a player doesn't file are they considered free agents?

Awesome job, Hendry. You like guys that can catch? Well then, let's re-up Patterson and Burnitz with long term deals! whoohoo! I'm just waiting for JH to trade Ramirez b/c he "can't catch."

Sweet, this will be our opening day starting lineup:

C Barrett

1B Lee

2B Perez

3B Ramirez

SS Furcal

LF Murton

CF Patterson

RF Burnitz (resigned after declining option)

^^ now that team is a contender.

You have no idea what would have happened if Nomar hadn't gotten hurt in April. Until then, Neifi was a backup. That's clearly the plan this year as well. Good grief, people.

How can you possibly say that given what happened after Nomar went down and the Cub were clearly out of the race. Good grief, indeed.

well the white sox did it, so by that logic we will go get wagner, ryan , and burnett. but wait, we won't do that we will just half ass it and hope this year those young rookies/prospects Rusch and Perez come into their own

But you have to pitch the rookies once every 12 days and EXPECT them to be sharp while blowing out a guy elbow that just got back from rehab from over pitching him.

The odds of Hendry signing high-profile vets at both SS and 2B are close to zero, and Walker is now trade bait. Get used to it folks, Neifi Perez WILL be an opening day starter for the Chicago Cubs.

so, let me get this straight, this offseason the cubs have given a 2 year deal to a career 5+ ERA pitcher and a 2 year deal to a ss. with a career OBP of barely over .300? And also there is talk of trading Todd Walker who is a career .300 avg hitter? I'm not sure I see the logic in any of these moves? I've just about had it with this team.. 2006 is going to be 2005 all over again, but maybe even worse... This team has the highest or one of the highest payrolls in the NL and we waste our money on crap like this? And with Dusty at the Helm, our #5 starter will be Rusch and our starting SS will be Perez, Joy!

Oh yeah, how could I forget the talk about Hendry AND Baker getting extentions? so this crap could continue for another 2 or 3 years....

2 year. 2 years. That's bloody inexcusable given who our manager is. If we had a competent human being calling the shots, Neifi would be the 25th man.

However, we have a special needs manager, who's incapable of doing anything right. He sucks in game, he sucks filling out the lineup card, he uses veterans like a drunk uses gin, and he can't even keep his players from acting like buffoons. We could hire a 9 year old to do these thing.

Hendry needs to go, too. I'm sick of him overpaying for mediocrity, but somehow never finding enough money to sign the actual impact guys this team needs. I have as much faith in his ability to assert himself onto Baker as I have in winning the lotto tonight. Ditch this crap.

Jeez Hendry show some Balls and stop playing it safe all the time ( which hasn't worked). At least with the sox williams showed some big ones by Lee 4 podsednik what do we do? plan for the worst all the time. Just because nomar got injured well that must mean that Furcal or Cedeno will. Position players are not pitchers pull a deal to help this team for god sakes man.

I'm trying to fashion a noose out of mine right now.

I've tried to find financials on this deal and have had no luck. When that shoe drops I expect it to be about the same $ as Rusch. Unreal.

Hey US dont diss the special needs i work for Mencap as a playscheme organiser and my 4 year olds would never make such awful and mind boggling decisions as these!!!!!

You're probably right.

I'm not going to lose it....just as long as he doesn't start.

Ever.

Let's take a look at the situations here:

Sign Furcal, keep Walker

Neifi is redundant with Cedeno already around, bad move.

Sign Nomar, keep Walker

Same thing, you don't need two players for the same job, and you don't need to be signing one to a two year deal when the other is much younger, cheaper, and in all likelihood better.

Sign Furcal/Nomar, trade Walker

Now we have Cedeno and Neifi both vying for 2B. Uh-oh. Bad move.

Sign no one, keep Walker

Same thing, except at SS. Can't have those tailing throws messing things up.

Sign Furcal/Nomar, keep Walker, trade Cedeno

This is the only situation where Neifi isn't excessive, or at high-risk to be the everyday starter. How likely is this situation, and what are the odds keeping Neifi and trading Cedeno improves the team?

This is a terrible, terrible move.

i must be the only one who likes this.

the org. seems pretty clear in that they want cedeno to start.

to be fair cedeno WAS starting until he got hurt.

i dont mind neifi that much he can pick it pretty good in case of sucktitude from the rook or another injury or whatever may come.

So yea come on guys you dont have to hate EVERYTHING

Wow....I was hoping the title change of the thread was a misprint. Bad, bad move. Here comes another year of veteran vs. rookie B.S.

Another case of a guy who would be a good backup (insert Holly here) that will probably see a lot of playing time under the current manager.

And to top it off, he gets TWO years.

Hendry better have some monster moves up his sleeve.

Unbelievable.

In order for that to be true Baker would have to act completely differently than he does in every other situation like this.

Also, you used the phrase "sucktitude". That adjective is Neifi Perez. Even if Cedeno put up numbers identical to NEfi's, bad OBP and all, at least Cedeno won't cost $3m of budget.

This move is complete crap.

You base this opnion on what evidence?

You guys know that Luis Sojo led the dominican league last winter in hitting. Sure he is retired and coaching for the Yankees now, but I bet if we gave them Z they would send him to us and be the 2B that catches the ball to go with Neifi.

I don't hate everything just things that Hendry does! :D

IMO, in the beginning of the season when it means something Baker will go to his trusted vets. I see this:

Furcal SS

Perez 2B

Lee 1B

ARam 3B

Wilson CF

Mench RF

Barrett C

Murton LF

And this is the best case scenerio.

Christ almighty. This is ridiculous. So what are we doing now with the infield? I think part of the reason they signed him is because he's drinking buddies with Furcal, but watch, he'll sign with the Mets, and then we get Neifi! starting at short. Sweet. You are 0-2 in my book, Jimbo.
