The Oliver Stone in me thinks this. Lawton took the rap for another player and this is why he is admitting guilt so easily.

I would hope that MLB is not this desperate to cover their stars' a$$es. But unfortunately considering their behavior so far regarding steroids, this is a perfectly plausible scenario.

The MLB leak about the "hard" nature of Palmeiro's roids made Raffy's lies look ridiculous. Maybe Lawton knows that if he tells lies about accidental ingestion in vitamins another leak will conveniently surface and expose the ugly specifics of what he actually took. I think the details of positiive tests should automatically be made public, but since that is contrary to current policy MLB will have to rely on leakers to prevent players from fabricating excuses.

It would have been nice if we could of gotten some steroid-fueled production from him, but nada, not a sausage.

I never liked the move in the first place.

yeah i miss jody gerut too :(

I actually thought Gerut would have been a decent gamble for 2006, because his knees should be OK then. Unfortunately we needed someone who could help in 2005, and Gerut wasn't it.

Nor was Lawton.

How could he be taking the rap? Did he pee in the cup of another player? Wouldn't that have been snuffed out as soon as he stepped into the room with players and MLB officials?

Considering some of the dodgy excuses we've gotten from some of the steroid offenders (**cough** Rafeal Palmeiro **cough**), I was quite impressed with Lawton's willingness to fess up and claim responsibility:

"I made a terrible and foolish mistake that I will regret for the rest of my life," Lawton said in a statement that he read over the telephone to The Associated Press. "I take full responsibility for my actions and did not appeal my suspension. I apologize to the fans, the game, my family and all those people that I let down. I am truly sorry and deeply regret my terrible lapse in judgment."

By the way, note that Lawton did not appeal his suspension. According to Will Carroll / USA Today Sports Weekly, the A.L. playoff offender was in fact appealing his suspension. If Will Carroll and USA Today Sports Weekly are correct, there is another suspect that is still at large.

It could mean there is another or he could just be playing with a legal language loop-hole, or just out and out lying to get ahead of the mob.

He could very well have appealed or protested the finding of steroids but not the penalty phase of the decision. or he could simply be hiding behind the confidentially agreement and lying and knowing that it will not be contradicted. Mcuh like the owners publicly making false economic statements and knowing the players cannot say a peep to the contrary.

Yeh, we really really needed someone for 2005, seeing as the season wasn't at all over for the Cubs then, what with them being tied for fifth in the wild card race at the time of the trade and Lawton being a notoriously brilliant player, not least in the second half of every season, and the Cubs having absolutely no other options in left field, besides of course the useless red-headed kid with the .441 average at the time.

To me the MLB version of steroid testing makes Pro Wrestling seem real.
