It would have been nice if we could of gotten some steroid-fueled production from him, but nada, not a sausage.

I never liked the move in the first place.

I've mentioned this before, but Jody Gerut would have been a nice player to have on the roster for '06. I don't want him starting, but he would have been crackerjack as a 4th outfielder.

And as long as we are on the topic of 4th OFers, what's sad is that whenever we entertain the possibilty of acquiring some potentially useful veteran to fill out the roster, the first concern is whether Dusty will play him every day.

What would Dusty do if our bench was full of rookies? He would probably go nuts.

Considering some of the dodgy excuses we've gotten from some of the steroid offenders (**cough** Rafeal Palmeiro **cough**), I was quite impressed with Lawton's willingness to fess up and claim responsibility:

"I made a terrible and foolish mistake that I will regret for the rest of my life," Lawton said in a statement that he read over the telephone to The Associated Press. "I take full responsibility for my actions and did not appeal my suspension. I apologize to the fans, the game, my family and all those people that I let down. I am truly sorry and deeply regret my terrible lapse in judgment."

By the way, note that Lawton did not appeal his suspension. According to Will Carroll / USA Today Sports Weekly, the A.L. playoff offender was in fact appealing his suspension. If Will Carroll and USA Today Sports Weekly are correct, there is another suspect that is still at large.

I actually thought Gerut would have been a decent gamble for 2006, because his knees should be OK then. Unfortunately we needed someone who could help in 2005, and Gerut wasn't it.

That is somewhat refreshing.

You left out the "And I'd do it again in a second if I knew I wasn't going to get caught"

Of course, neither was Lawton.

Ironic. The Cubs got rid of a RF who was widely suspected of using steroids, only to replace him, in part, with a player who gets caught for using steroids.
