He's not coming anywhere near chicago or in our division. Remember when he pretended to hurt his foot so he wouldn't have to play the white sox. Because he knew they're be Cubs fans there to boo him. That's why he won't be on any team that has to play the Cubs. he is essentially affraid of us. And he has reason to be. He ditched us.

it's amazing what happens to people when they can't take roids anymore.

The fact that he's in his late 30's has absolutely nothing to do with it, right?

It does. But his decline has been alarmingly sharp compared to most sluggers of his magnitude. This leads one to wonder...

With some sluggers, they just gradually decline until they can't find a job anymore, or retire.

Some just hit the wall. McGwire, Mays, etc just hit the wall. Decent one year, then terrible the next. Sammy was one of those.

Its probably not the best idea to reference Mark McGwire as an example of an aging star who hit the wall as opposed to someone who used steroids.

True, but my point is made.

What's that for. It's true. He's affraid to come anywhere near the Cubs.

I genuinely miss him and I'm not afraid to say it.

I do, too.

In time I'll grow to accept someone else as the #1 slugger on this team. I like Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez very much, but they're no Sammy.

Nothing was better than a Sammy homer to win it. Nothing.

I love Sammy. Always have, always will.

I was appalled at the insanity surrounding that thing at the end of the 04 season. I didn't care if he showed up for the game or not, the season was over. Lord knows that Chip and Steve didn't show up for that one (yeah, they sat there, but they didn't say much of anything) considering they knew they were both lame ducks at that point.

Obviously, I'm glad we traded him when we did, because things had deteriorated, and because I wouldn't have wanted to watch him play so badly in Baltimore this last season, but Sammy was what made me a Cub fan and I'll always remember that. :D

Not a very good memory eh? He didn't appear in the one series vs. the white sox when they played in Chicago. Claimed his foot hurt and asked to be put on the DL.

Well put. Many forgot what he did for our team, our city, and for baseball as well as sports in general. While I don't condone his actions at the end of the season, players have done much worse than leave a meaningless game they had off early. It makes me sad to think that Sammy will not be remembered in the best of light.

Oh well, best of luck to him.

I love Sammy, but I'm not crazy enough to agree to give him $1 million to sit on the bench. Let's take that $1 million and add it to the "Furcal Fund" or "Giles Fund".

I have no idea whether Sammy milked the foot injury to avoid Chicago, but my gut says he didn't.

That being said, despite being an excellent player, I always found Sammy to be a dreary fraud. I am extremely happy that guys like Derrek Lee and Mark Prior are now the face of this franchise.

Your point is mde that one of your examples is a guy who hit the wall suddenly and was a user?

If I were The Cubs I would at least bridge the following offer to his agent, even if it's just a courtesy call slash "mild attempt to mend bridges"

Minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training, if he makes the big league roster he gets $1 million plus incentives on games played. If he doesn't make the team but thinks his performance will get another team to bite, or even if he is going to make the team but in too limited of a role, he can void his contract. If he wants to hang it up, then he can go out with a huge retirement celebration, including his number being instantly retired.

Worst case he tries out in Spring Training, fails, and retires with dignity and as a Cub. Best case he tries out, we're shocked that maybe he has a little left in the tank, and he's our 4th outfielder/pinch hitter next season.

Not going to happen of course...

Ok, Mays, Ruth (his final season with the Braves). Happy now?

Sammy brings some intense emotions like a bad divorce. It just might take me awhile but I'm sure I'll appreciate all the wonderful things he did for the Cubs more later than I do now.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Sammy diagnosed with a Staff Infection on his foot? I'm pretty sure he was. I know Sox fans like to think they're so tough that Sammy was scared of their booing, but it was a serious injury.
