This signing doesn't bother me as I like Glendon. I thought he was pitching well until he got moved to the pen and didn't get consistant work.

Will he get consistent work again?

It's hard to say as it depends on who the Cubs aquire for the pitching staff. If they do get Burnett or Lowe probably not. I'm not counting on Wood being a starting pitcher until July at the earliest so maybe he'll be in his slot until Wood is ready.

To me, this just seems like Hendry is patching holes again instead of replacing them. I'm starting to really think Hendry has no gameplan. If he thinks you are valuable he will bring you back, yet he won't know where to place you or put you on the roster. I'm telling you we are going to have a 12-man pitching staff again, and I dont like this move one bit.

Hoops, The problem with Rusch in the swing role is that, as you said, he stinks as a relief pitcher. If Hendry is worried about injuries again perhaps that's an issue that should be addressed instead of signing Rusch to fill in.

But, do we know he is a fill in? It is quite possible that the Cubs have already come to the conclusion that Kerry Wood will not be starting the first few months of the season. And maybe the intention is to trade Jerome Williams and Sergio Mitre in the offseason for hitting help.

It's very possible the Cubs opening day rotation is:

Zambrano

Prior

Free agent or trade

Maddux

Rusch

Then it becomes even more imperative to fix the offense.

I don't doubt for a second that the Cubs are going to a 12 man staff for '06.

You got that right. Any word on Macias and Perez yet?

My 2 cents: Rusch is a decent option. But if he's gonna be in the rotation, I'd rather spend a few million more for better production. If he's gonna be in the pen, I'd rather spend a few million more.....for better production.

He won't likely be overpaid. He just won't be a bargain or steal like he had the chance of being this past season. The Cubs will get what they pay for. They could get more by paying for more. The Cubs are in a position where more production should be the objective.

I have to wonder something. Hendry should know by now that Rusch is at his best as a regular starter. However, this makes me curious...

Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, Hill, Williams, and Rusch can all start next season. I'm thinking that guys such as Pinto and Nolasco will also be ready for the rotation if called upon during some point next season. Yet, there's only a 5 man rotation.

I'm thinking this deal just made Rich Hill and Jerome Williams much more expendable...

Which is too bad, since I would rather hold on to Williams than keep Rusch.

Exactly. That is why this is complete bs.

Are you saying what I think you're saying because if you are I might agree.

If Hendry does that I want an impact bat and not Soriano.

That's why I really believe that Hendry doesn't have any game plan whatsoever.

What if these 2 brought in a Manny Ramirez or another 30/100/300/380 hitter?

Which is too bad, since I would rather hold on to Williams than keep Rusch.

Soriano is exactly the player Hendry coverts: toolsy, power, fast. Those 30 SB's must look awfully tempting to the scout in him.

I hope I'm wrong.

So would I, but in a trade, Williams will get you more than Rusch will.

That would be great, but I think Boston would want more proven impact guys for Manny.

You forgot high K rate and low OBP. Hendry, the anti-Beane of GMs.

You're not wrong in any way, shape or form. I wonder what the Blue Jays are doing this off season.

I will remind you that in 5 starts in May he pitched 30 innings and gave up only 8 earned runs, and then in September he had 5 starts where he pitched 31 innings and gave up a respectable 12 earned runs,

and went 4-0. He was only really bad in June when he started against the Yankees and Red Sox, and was horrendous out of the pen.

I think it's fair to say, he has been an effective starter in 2004 and 2005.

In August, Rusch started 4 games, went 16.1 innings, and gave up 18 ER, going 0-4.

Rusch wasn't an effective starter. He had a WHIP near 1.50 and a BAA near .300. He was even worse as a reliever. If he picks up his player option then we're stuck with him, but he's definitely not the type of player we should be extending for TWO years.

36 homers and a .500 slg from the 6 hole wouldn't look too bad.
