Money Works Out For Good '06 Team

Last year the Cubs paid 18 million to Sammy Sosa, 8M to Nomar, 10M between Hawkins,Remlinger, and Borowski, 4M to Burnitz, 2M to Patterson, this adds up to about 40 million give or take a couple million.

 

I say this because I belie the Cubs could put a very good team on the field with these players: Rafael Furcal for 8M, Brian Giles for about 10-12 Million, Kenny Lofton 2M, Paul Byrd 7M, B.J. Ryan 5M, Rudy Saenez 2M. This adds up to only 35 million so you could get more talent or it pays for Zambrano and Priors raises.

This lineup has a good balance of speed and power. Lee can drive in planty of runs with Furcal and Lofton ahead of him and in a year win Pie is ready he can take Loftons spot. There are also good OBP guys in Lofton, Murton, Giles, and Walker.

everyone knows what this rotation is capable of and Byrd is a good pitcher who eats up innings.

Giles will sign with SD. Furcal may cost more than $8 mil per. $7 mil is too much for Paul Byrd. B.J. Ryan is going to get more than $5mil per. While I like Lofton, I see him and Furcal as somewhat redundant.

I don't think it's feasible to sign that many FA's of that caliber. I don't think it's possible(read: legal) to do so either.

Giles will likely re-up with SD and Furcal will make more than that. I'm ok with Lofton, but if you get Furcal, I'd rather take a gamble with a different CF.

 

I doubt we sign Ryan for that money, and I seriously doubt he goes anywhere he isn't the closer except maybe the Yankees.

 

I don't sign Byrd for that kind of cash because I really don't think he's that much of an upgrade over Williams.

i wouldnt get our hopes up about adding a starting CF. i think its corey to start than pie time later in the year. furcal is our best bet, id pony up 5 years if necessary.
