My theory about a potential Abreu trade revolved around this type of regime change.

Philly was sick of contending but never actually competing for postseason glory. The fans have no faith in the direction of that franchise, and ownership is pissed that attendance dropped pretty sharply in the park's 2nd year. My guess is the next guy will try and shake things up, with the first order of business being getting rid of Thome. They'll end up paying some of his contract, and might have to give up some more talent in return. I still won't go as far as saying Abreu is as good as gone, but Utley and Howard are the only players the fans love.

I really think Hendry has to go back to the Nomar negotiations and think of a way to become the middle man, sending a reduced cost Thome to the AL and ending up with Abreu in RF. But if the new GM loves Abreu's unheralded star label, and relatively risk free contract, and instead chooses to deal Burrell and the 3/36.5m left on his deal, then I wouldn't mind Pat the bat in LF next year.

I can't see any way in the world Philly's new GM would deal Abreau.

funny, from what i've read the phillies wish they didnt sign him to a no trade clause so they could trade abreu.

Might be a possibility if insiders Amaro Jr or Arbuckle gets the job. I wonder if Philly may talk to Brian Cashman.

I'm just shocked by that. He's one of the top 10 players in the game.

Philly fans booed Mike Schmidt the first five seasons he played for the team. The Phillies got rid of a yong Rolen after a bad season and a half. They are not the smartest organization in baseball. But then again neither have the Cubs.

In all fairness, Philly didn't trade Rolen because of a drop in production. They traded him becaue he let them know on several occasions that there was no way in the world he was going to stay with the franchise once he earned his FA rights.

Remember all the go after Rolen threads we had? I'm pretty happy with the Cubs version of an oft injured 3rd baseman though.

what kind of package would it take to get abreu? would hill, pinto & harvey do the trick? if the cubs could snag wilkerson from washington to play cf & get abreu to play rf without giving up murton, that would be an excellent of imo.

The fans love Rollins, particularly lately.

I think Thome will be traded, and possibly Burrell. But I don't think Abreu.

I think the Cubs would have to offer much more than just that package. Sub in Jerome Williams for Rich Hill due to the park the Phillies play in, and then toss in Scott Moore & Felix Pie and you'd have a deal they might bite on.

My guess is even more than that. They'd want an "ML-ready" position player, and arguably, Pie isn't that guy. Murton might be on their radar, and with the way the ball jumps out of that park, he would be very succesful there.

Would you deal Murton, Hill, and a Single A prospect to get Abreu?

It depends on who you get for LF and CF. It doesn't do you much good to upgrade to Abreu in RF, and then get crap in the other two spots.

I don't think the Cubs should talk much about a 1 on 1 deal, I really think they have to get involved in a three way to help Philly unload Thome. That's the way you get away with giving up less talent.

*Oh, and yes I'd do that deal if I could sign Giles for LF. Then I'd go Hairston, Giles, Lee, Abreu, Ramirez, Walker, Barrett, Cedeno and be pretty happy with my lineup.

That leaves the Cubs still looking for 2 OF's. Are any corner OF's even near ready in the organization?

why not Walker before Giles? Just curious - I don't actually think it would make any difference.

Because Giles' ~.400 OBP is much better than Walker's .350, and would give Lee/Abreu/Ramirez an unbelievable amount of RBI opportunity.

I would expect Giles power numbers to go way up at Wrigley as well.

I wouldn't expect them to go way up, although they should improve a bit. Ryno did quite fine with power in the 2 spot. To me, Giles' biggest draw is his OBP (and it just so happens to be the Cubs biggest need), so on a team with Lee, Abreu and Ramirez, it makes perfect sense to me to put him in the 2 hole. Ramirez, as a swing first kind of guy who doesn't walk or strike out a whole bunch, would flourish in that lineup of OBP terrors. Walker would also get tons of chances, and you get the whole RLRLRL thing, which might just be most valuable in the postseason when managers sometimes overthink pitching changes.

I'd expect Giles power numbers to go back to his pre San Diego days.

how about williams, hill, pinto & harvey. that gets them 2 of our top lefties, a potentially very good righty starter & a #1 draft power hitting right fielder. from what i've heard hendry is not going to trade murton, ep or pie and rightly so imo. the cubs can then resign rusch to be the #5 starter in place of williams or hill. maybe the nationals would take cp, mitre & welly for wilkerson.

Is anyone else hearing this rumour: Jim Thome and David Bell to Seattle for Adrian Beltre?

Oh, that's why the Mariners are terrible. Why would they consider that? They lose a guaranteed year off a terrible contract, but in the long run they save nothing. Beltre for his down year is still extremely talented, and what, 10 years younger than Thome? Plus they're paying Richie Sexson 8 figures to be a 1B/DH/LF. I don't get why they'd consider that deal.

I think I read about it in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Beltre wants out. The Phillies want Thome out.
