For reference, and recognizing that lack of team OBP is the primary problem with the Cubs offense, here is the rank ordering of all major leaguers in 2005 with an OBP of 375 or greater. Stats shown are BA, OBP, SLG and OPS.

Several names jump out at me. Brian Giles, of course. Can Todd Helton play LF? Can OBP Jesus (Nick Johnson)? Is Bobby Abreu really available in trade? Is Luis Castillo available from Florida? Good old Adam Dunn. And I love Chase Utley.

Would that make Derek Lee the best overall hitter in the league?

Derrek Lee might be the player of the year.

Might be? I don't think there is any question (at least statistically) that he IS the player of the year. The only question would be whether voters think the player of the year is also the MVP. Sadly, they won't.

I remember earlier this year when so many people were writing off Helton. I still wish the Cubs would explore trading Lee for some bigtime OF help, and bring in Helton. Of course, that is dependant on getting proper value for Lee.

I think its also dependent on dealing with Helton's contract. Lee is a far better value at this point.

I think Giles is the obvious target there. I would also inquire about Burrell if the Phillies want too much for Abreu.

If the Cubs can't sign Giles, would Jenkins be available in a trade?

Jenkins injuries worry me. We have enough of those risks around. Is he really worth giving up talent to obtain? I would rather pursue someone like Burrell - power hitters with plate discipline are likely to improve as they mature.

I'd like to see the Cubs sign Giles and if Castillo could be had in a trade, we would have a very good team.

I've always liked Castillo. the beauty of him is that Dusty couldn't misuse him. he's a fast guy, so Dusty would love him at the top. The fact he actually gets on base is gravy for the rest of us.

I really hope, if he's available, the Cubs explore a trade for him.

Now that Burrell has bounced back, I think Philly builds around him, Utley, and Howard. I think they get ripped off in a Thome and/or Abreu deal before they deal Pat the Bat. Last year would have been the time to go after him.

Yankees tried Nick Johnson in left a few years ago and quickly abanedoned the idea. Nick was simply awful in the outfield. In addition, he is an injury prone as they come and would probably only be available for half the games.
