Some excerpts I found interesting:

Renyel Pinto, LHP

Does Pinto's failure with Iowa hurt his value as a prospect? That remains to be seen, but after going 1-2 with a 9.53 ERA in six starts, he was sent back down to the Southern League, where he was voted the league's top lefty. In his second stint with West Tenn, he went 10-3 with a 2.71 ERA, striking out 123 in 129 2/3 IP. He then gave up just one earned run in 14 2/3 playoff innings.

What are your thoughts on Pinto?

Jermaine Van Buren, RHP

The Van Buren Express kept on running, all the way to Chicago. Two years ago, he was pitching in independent ball. Last year, he went from being the 12th man on the Lansing staff all the way to Triple-A Iowa. This season, he finished second in the PCL with 25 saves while posting a 1.98 ERA and stirking out 65 in 54 2/3 IP. He got called up to Chicago in late August and could work into the closer mix in 2006.

Is this the same JvB we saw in Chicago?

yes., he's the guy that baker let rot on the bench for 2 weeks between apperances and then quickly pulled him as he walked everyone. it's the same thing he did to wellemeyer in 2004. if he gets regular work, he can be very good out of the pen to go along with wuretz & williamson imo. i assume novoa will be traded btw. who knows, if williamson tanks he might even set up dempster.

I think there are way too many arms ahead of JVB. He'll be back at Iowa next season unless injuries hit the bullpen hard.

I still like Pinto's potential. I'm hoping he performs well at Iowa this year and either pitches his way into the Cubs' plans for 2007 or is used in a trade to help the major league team.

Pinto's big problem throughout his career has been his lack of control, and that worsened against AAA hitters in 2005 (he more than doubled his minor league career averages in BB/9 at AAA). But he also was hit hard at AAA: at Iowa, Pinto gave up a .313 BAA (nearly 1.5 more H/IP than his career norms). He was also twice as likely to serve up a HR at AAA compared to AA in 2004 and six times as likely compared to his 2005 AA numbers (some of that increase is to be expected since the PCL is such a tremendous hitter's league). His BB/IP, H/IP and HR/IP leveled out near his strong 2004 West Tenn and 2003 Daytona numbers once he returned to West Tenn.

In 2002, Renyel struggled at Daytona with poor numbers similar to his 2005 AAA numbers. He rebounded with a strong 2003 in Daytona. Hopefully Renyel can rebound in a similar manner at Iowa next season. He needs get his walks down to a respectable level and cut down on those hits and HRs.

EDIT: Since this MiLB.com story was the topic of another thread from a while back, I merged the two threads.
