Most of the "deals" revolve around other teams taking Lowell. I don't think Lowell is on anybody "must-have" list. Somebody is going to have to pick up a ton of his salary if he is going to get moved (let alone moved twice).

Give LA an arm, and take Perez and they may do it. Perez has been griping about lack of run support. Sounds like he's sick of LA. There's not too big of difference between the money Perez and Lowell are getting.

Lowell's only had one bad year. His ops was .880 and .870 in 03 and 04. If the Cubs didn't have Ramirez, I wouldn't mind rolling the dice on him, especially if I'm giving up little.

I would try to flip Lowell to the Brewers (who are in desperate need for a 3B) take Branyan (good bench option) off their hands and throw a PTBNL in and call it done!

Just wanna say, sweet car.

I don't think Hendry will trade Walker. If he picks up his option, it will be with the intent of keeping him, unless Walker OKs a trade to a specific team. I know that Walker doesn't have a no trade clause, but he signed at a discounted rate with a cheap option. Hendry takes pride in being a standup guy, and I dont' think he will damage his reputation he has built around the league with players by picking up Walker's bargain option just to flip him to another team.

If you want to look at team with financial troubles look at Philly. Despite the bad 2nd half, I try and get Abreu or Burrell and take Bell off of their books.

They'll have 77 mil locked in 11 players and then wanting to bring back Wagner and pay Myers will push them over 90 with 13 players.

Speaking of Abreu, check out the scathing remarks about Bobby made by SI's Tom Verducci recently. I didn't realize how low is 2nd half power numbers have been. What's going on with him?

Don't know if it's playiing on his mind, but his fiance, former Miss Venezuela Alicia Machado, got caught doing the nasty with another guy on tape this summer. The steamy sex video has been all over the place. It was a major sex scandal. he was due to wed her in December. I would imagine that's gotta affect a guy's job performance.

Stop and imagine for a moment what a zoo this team would turn into with Milton Bradley on a Dusty Baker team.

Nice idea and all, but I would not be in favor of it.

lol-I actually spit up Henry Weinhards when I read that...lol

What's with all the Castillo love, I don't get it? If you're going to trade for an external 2B, for crying out loud make it Marcus Giles, not Luis Castillo.

And forget about Lowell, he's done.

If Florida wants us to take a bad contract off their hands, the extra player we demand is Miguel Cabrera, not Luis Castillo. Otherwise, tell the Fish to go swim with themselves.

I'm pretty surpirsed to see that you dig Juan Pierre and not Luis Castillo? He might not steal as many bases, but he has a tendancy to get on base at a pretty high rate. He also is excellent on defense. I guess there is also a chance that FLA might be trying to dump him. But yeah, get Lowell away from here- they had their chance to give us Lowell a few years back and they missed it.

Luis Castillo is my second choice after Marcus Giles and those are the only two I'd be interested in. Otherwise, I keep Todd Walker.

what about getting castillo and lowell for marginal prospects and flipping lowell and walker to the twins, in dier need of offense for some young arms.

That scandal was revealed pretty early in the year. Abreu went on an absolute tear after that news and the cancellation of his wedding was already out. I think something else happened.

The Phillies have been saying for most of the second half that his swing changed after the HR derby. In the last couple of weeks there's been some comments in the press about him battling a leg injury of some sort, so I can't relly blame him for not legging out a triple.

If the cubs can get him for something reasonable, I think you've gotta pull the trigger. This guy is consistentently good every year, he's an OBP machine with speed and power, and he's got a rocket arm. Just think of the damage he could do batting in front of DLee and Aram

edit #2: Abreu's career line is .303/.411/.512

You don't get it?

The guy will likely win his 3rd straight gold glove, he has averaged well over a .370 OBP since '99. He is a switch-hitter and would provide the Cubs with their best lead-off man since Bobby Dernier. What's not to love?

Marcus Giles is a fine choice as well. But there is no reason to think that Castillo isn't right up there with him.

What would you consider reasonable?

I think it would be fairly unreasonable to think that the Phillies would trade him period, much less for something "reasonable". I would think it would take a lot given how close the Phillies came to the playoffs this season. Now is not the time for salary-dumping in the city of brotherly love.

Oh I totally agree with you, the Phillies would be fools to trade him off, especially to "shake things up" like phillyBurbs.com was alluding to. However, IF the Phillies front office were shopping him, you've got to take a look at what they want.

The only salary dumping they'll be doing is Thome, and I just don't see how they can pull it off.

Yeah, I agree. Abreu would be an incredible acquisition but I just can't see a reason why the Phillies would be willing to deal him.

However, if the Cubs can lure Giles, get Lofton to keep CF warm until Pie is ready and acquire a 2B who can lead off like Castillo, their offense will be in really good shape. Question is, can they do all that? Heck, can they do any of that?

I could see the Phillies shopping Aberu if the other team would take Thome as well.

Yeah, but they are still going to want a heck of a lot in return. And I mean a heck of a lot. That's like trading DLee to someone if they would agree to take Maddux, too.

In 7 seasons as a full time top of the order hitter, the guy has 1 100 run season. Seems to me that if he really did "make things happen" at the top of the order, he'd do better than that. This year he had 10 SB and 7 CS. While in 2004 that was 21 and 4, in 2003 that was 21 and 19. His speed seems to be hurting the team more than helping it since he apparantly has more faith in his running than he should.

I think Castillo at the top of the order would be fine, but I'm not sure he'd really help improve the team as a whole when the one bat he'd replace was already good. Plus, all that extra cash they'd have to take on would mean less ability to fill the other, far greater needs.

The Cubs need LF, CF and RF production, they got none in 2005. They also need SS production. They don't need an upgrade to 2B.

It's sad that "none" in that sentence is not an exaggeration. Has there ever been a worse OF?
