GMJ as a stopgap CF/4th OFer? He signed with Texas for $1.1 mill in '05.

I like him better than Lofton, but that's not saying much for me.

I remember when GMJ was a Cub in 01, and made a sliding catch in center where the ball popped out of his glove, went over his head, and he caught it with his barehand. Edited by sweetpeteman

I remember him as a relatively patient hitter. But his numbers really aren't that impressive. I'd say my feeling is GMJ and Lofton are a wash, and that salary concerns in the only issue. Although GMJ might have the advantage in the field.

As I remember, GMjr is a very good fielder, which is what swayed me in the comparison.

I'd be fine with GM Jr. I think he might be a decent platoon with Hairston.

GMJR would be ok, but I see him as more of a 4th OF. I wouldn't want him getting too many starts. He's a near great fielder. He's a better LH hitter, but has tons more power from the RH side.

He was a bum when he was here and he'll be a bum if he comes back. Texas is one of the best hitters' parks in America. Do not be fooled.

Plus, he's exactly the kind of guy Baker would run out there in place of Pie when he's ready. It's going to be bad enough next year when Baker is blocking Cedeno by playing Rich Aurilia.

I think the Cubs traded him two days later.

GMJ in '05

Home: .218/.289/.369/.658

Away: .299/.358/.506/.865

I was gonna point that out.

To be fair, he did have much better home numbers than away numbers in '04, but his away line of .261/.339/.420/.759 that year is still pretty decent for a CF.

He's a bum and exactly the wrong kind of guy to hand to Baker with a kid coming up thru the system.

Baylor used him to block our last CF of the future. Don't let Baker do the same thing with the next one.

I really have no problem with Pie not setting foot in Wrigley until '07, except for maybe a September callup next year. If GMJ is signed to a 1 year deal, that's not a problem. Plus, Baker's contract expires after next year, so when Pie is ready we may(extreme emphasis on may) not have to worry about that.

Plus, is there anything more definitive than "he's a bum"? What exactly is bummish about him?

Pie doesn't belong anywhere near Wrigley in the first half of next year. I see no reason for him to step foot in the majors until September at the earliest. Somebody has to play CF next year and after the CPatt witch hunt I don't see many other options. I think GMJ is very similar to many of the bigger names bandied about so far, but probably 1/5th the cost, or less. In no way would he be a cog for the future, but he also wouldn't be in the way of somebody who supposedly needs to start next year. As for his stint with the Cubs, he was 26, and has put up better numbers ever since. While some contend he "blocked" Corey in the past, Patterson never should have been there in the first place. The Cubs were irresponsible to bumb him from low A to AA. He should have been in Daytona in '00, AA in '01, and saw his first action late in that year, with the possibility of being the starter in '02. It was the Cubs organization and blatantly screwed with the CF position, don't hold that against GMJ.

Then again, I'm not going to campaign for the guy. I could live with a Hairston/Patterson competition next year, depending on who else is signed.

He was actually waived by the Cubs and picked up by the Pirates.

I'd rather have Jose Cruz Jr. in that role.

I think it might depend on how many infielders the Cubs have on the bench. Also, if the Cubs decide to go with 14 or 15 pitchers next year Hairston would be more valuable.

I assumed he meant Cruz Jr. and CPatt instead of CPatt/Hairston .

I'd want Cruz Jr. as the 4th OF'er. You can still brink Hairston back as the 5th OF'er, utility IF'er spot.

Hairston is ideal for a role like Macias currently has. Put Hairston in Macias' role and you'll have a very good lineup/bench.

You want Cruz Jr as 4th OF, and Hairston as 5th OF? Who are you 1-3 OF? Those are pretty expensive guys to have on your bench when we're talking about making the upgrades needed throughout the starting lineup.

Goony, please correlate this thread with the thread in Transaction about the Cubs OF.
