i think the pledge should just be "i pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the united states, sometimes, if i agree with the decisions that the people in charge make, and to the republic, for which it stands, unless i dont stand for what it stands for, one nation, under canada, with liberty and justice for most."

When I was a kid, I wondered much more about why I had to pledge allegiance to a flag than I ever worried about the God part. My country, parents, state, school, whatever. But a flag? What has it done to earn my allegiance?

Oh yeah, and if I remember correctly, I don't think 'under God' was in the original pledge, it was added in sometime in the 50's.

I hate that people actually bother with minutiae like this when there are real issues of church and state to be dealt with. Not only is it pointless, not even a substantive problem, but it's stuff like this that gives right wingers an endless supply of ammo that they can use to portray liberals as leftists trying to undermine the fabric of American society.

I agree with the post above and with tree. The thing I find most amusing about the pledge is that after the huge debate went on about it, they made it a law that everyone in a public school had to say it every day. Before then we never had to do the pledge in my high school. That annoyed me for the rest of the year...

Using God in anything that is nationally recognized is ridiculous.

Don't force your thoughts on me, and I wont force mine on you. (Which, by the way, I don't)

On, but we know that Jesus loves America. (A country that, of course, wasn't around back in the good 'ol days of big J)

the logical contortions that lawyers went through trying to defend the pledge should be reason enough to conclude that "under god" is a mistake. "The "God" in the pledge could refer to any god, or no god at all" is, I believe, the quote.

I think we should edit out that whole, "endowed by their Creator" part of the Declaration.

It's going to take a LOnG time to redact the Magna Carta

You shouldn't force them to say "under god" and you shouldn't force them to not say "under god". That is an individual choice not a tool of control.

and it isn't, even in patriotic Texas where it is mandatory to stand for the pledge each morning according to Jahova Witness vs. United States it is not necessary to even recite the pledge, but you must stand.

the poll was of interest to see how far we have gone or how far are we have fallen.

Thank you for your responses

Leave it in.

I used to have a satinist friend, who also happened to be in ROTC , so she of course had to stand for the pledge. She just didnt repeat under god. Its not that complicated people. Its two words, if you dont beleive in it, dont repeat them when you say the pledge.

Also, Why dont these people who want it taken out of the pledge take it off the money?

Also, I think its pretty offensive to say the pledge is pointless or dumb. I really dont think pledging aleigance to your country is either of those things.

You are completely right. We should just change it to 'under the theory of evolution.' How about that? Then all the religious people can just not repeat that. How do you think that'd go over?

I rank this up there with flag burning and that NBA dude who wouldn't stand for the National Anthem. It's AM Radio fodder without much substance.

This country can't even figure out if the 10 commandments belong on public display or not (two different courts ruled differently on this in the same week).

When we solve all our other problems, then we can worry about money, the pledge, and landing a man on the moon.

We never do "force, we offer, but it is your choice, but we are still a country where the majority has the final say....or at least it use to be.
