Giles is so much better than Hunter it isn't funny. His OBP is what, 100 points better?

Would anyone consider Hunter a good stop-gap until Pie is ready in 2007? He only has one year left on his contract, so it isn't like he necessarily be in our long-term plans.

I'd take Hunter over another year of Patterson, that's for sure.

And, with this year's free agent class, it isn't like there are that many quality outfielders available to us.

Think about what Hunter's cost will be compared to his use to us as a stopgap. It's not worth it.

hunter is not a stopgap, nor a long-term opportunity. his numbers are mediocre, even if he looks good being mediocre.

Sad thing is that Hunter is pretty good as far as CF's go offensively.

i'd rather put a non-CF in CF than overpay for hunter.

Hunter in CF for a year then move him to the corner spot Murton's not occupying.

Hunter in a corner spot? That's awful. He's not better than Burnitz, who has been disappointing as a $4m middle of the order guy.

Oh I agree, that's I why I said it wasn't worth it to get Hunter. Thing is though, there just aren't that many decent CFs out there. It's bad enough to make someone wonder if Patterson could return to previous norms, or even if Greenberg could hit .270/.350/.400 in CF.

if greenberg could do that, he'd be my choice.

I think you'd be looking more at .255/.310/.370 from a rookie Greenberg. He might eventually put up the numbers you list, but I don't think that's a realistic year 1 expectation.

Oh, just to respond to the thread...

No way am I interested in Hunter at $10+M. Not even a little bit. I'd rather go with Corey than Torii.

Admittedly I didn't look at Greenberg's numbers before I posted that line, and the nature of my post was hoping that he might be able to do that. I think you're line sells him a bit short. I'd think he'd be able to make a .700 OPS at a minimum. .250/.330/.370 maybe, Adam has always had a near .100 IsoD.

I think you're underestimating how difficult it is to hit at that level in the bigs as a rookie. I love Adam's game, but he has struck out a bit too much in the minors and has too little power for me to think he could hit .270 in a full season in the majors in his first year. I also doubt he'd carry his full IsoD to the bigs.

Is IsoD the difference between average and OBP?

Oh and...what's a diorama?

that's what i was thinking, too. tim, your OBP projection [-X was a bit low.

There are an awful lot of examples I could trot out of players whose minor league IsoD didn't exactly hold up during his rookie year.

Especially when they're trying to break into a lineup managed by Dusty.

Yeah, That first line was definitely the high end of the spectrum. And even if he doesn't have the same IsoD, I still think he'll be significantly better than a .310 OBP.

i don't disagree, i seriously doubt that greenberg will ghet many starts in CF next year.

Does it frighten anyone that the Cubs might trade Todd Walker and Patterson for Hunter and a prospect from the Twins?

There are many things the Cubs could do this off season that frighten me Vance.

I agree with both you. This is going to be the offseason that really shows us what Hendry can do.

Aren't some of his defensive skills kind of useless at Wrigley? Like when he slams into the wall and robs a HR. How does he do that at Wrigley without hurting himself?

I kind of mentioned that earlier, which justifies his value being over what it would be if he played in Wrigley. However, he is still way overpriced.

Is there a difference between hitting brick and a garbage bag? I don't think this should be the direction the Cubs should go in.

What if the Twins picked up part of his salary? If the Cubs got him it would be close to taking him for free if they have to pay his entire salary. I'd expect that the Twins would have to pay part of it to get the quality they want in return. So how much is Hunter really worth?

As far as defense goes, I don't really care about robbed HRs so much as preventing extra base hits by covering a lot of ground. It's been a while since I've seen Hunter play. How's his range?

There are teams that are in dire need of a centerfielder that would pay the Twins at least half of his salary to trade for him. Who is playing center for the Rangers? GMJ? Yuck! Kenny Lofton is going on 39 next year and he's the Phillies everyday centerfielder.

Even though Torrii hasn't have much to bring to the table, he will command some interest. No way will Minnesota have to eat his entire contract. In fact, they'd probably just keep him if that were the case.

Just say no, we need OBP more than we need power. Corey with his head on straight after winter ball (and fast approaching free agency where hopefully he'll realize he needs to get off his ass to make some money) could easily outdo Hunter's offensive line, at half the cost and not costing us players.

Not that I advocate Corey being our primary choice in center field next year, but if you can't do better than Hunter, don't bother.
