"I think Cub fans are proud of us"

Not this Cub fan.

Hmmm...

Well, I'll go on record as saying I agree with Barrett. I am proud of the Cubs!

Granted, I have my huge dissapointments and even anger at some point. But, every single time I get pi$$ed and walk away from the TV or turn off the radio, I always find myself going back and cathing up. Hoping till that last pitch that the Cubbies will turn it around and win the ballgame.

Am I proud that we have near 100 million bucks going towards a team that has a rookie left fielder, a role playing starting SS, a CF who forgot how to play and a 4/5 starter with + 4.00 era's NO. Am I proud that we are neck and neck with the Brewers and closer to last place than first, NO!

However, I carry the biggest smile on my face of anytime during the day when the Cubs get a "W" ... I am proud to see Maddux throw 200+ innings, to see him record his 3000 K in Cubbie blue. To hear and watch DLEE put up MVP numbers. To watch ARAM have a great year - An All Star. To have Mark Prior back from the horrible elbow hit earlier this year and pitch well. To watch Big Z go nuts and start to mature along the way.

Heck...I'm proud of the Cubs and I am proud to be a Cubs Fan!!

Now, think of how much happier we will all be when we win the World Series soon!

Go Cubs!

Wow, I guess I'm too tough on the Cubs.

I'll be proud of them when they win the World Series, and not before.

Every time I argue against the conventional wisdom that says Cubs fans don't really care if they win the World Series, and that the team will never win until the fans get more demanding, I hear or read somebody insinuate they are perfectly happy with the Cubs continued mediocrity and it really puts a dent in my theory.

I guess some Cubs fans really don't care if the team ever succeeds.

If your only definition of success is winning the WS, I think you're too harsh. I'll be happy if I see continuous progress as an organization. I'm as disappointed with the regression in minor league talent for the team in 2005 as I am with the record of the major league organization. I certainly want the Cubs to win the WS, but it is not the only goal with which I'll be satisfied in a given year.

There's really no point in rooting on a professional sports team unless you are rooting for them to win the championship. This isn't a little league team where you can be proud if everybody just figures out how to play, or a high school team where you can be happy with the team winning big games against rivals, or even a college team where you can enjoy watching a class of players grow from raw freshmen into solid seniors, and be proud of a postseason appearance.

This is pro ball. The only goal is the world series. The time for gradual improvement is long past. 2 steps forward 3 steps back will not set me up to be happy with 2 more steps forward.

I don't understand how one can be a proud of a team whose sum of its parts has played far below its potential.

It's like your kid brings home a C, but the kid is brilliant. You still love that kid, but you're not proud of that accomplishment.

But it wasn't his fault, the books were old, the air conditioning was on the fritz, the curve shifted, his favorite teacher went on maternity leave, they switched his schedule, the test was immediately after gym, he's young.

Well, unfortunately Son, I happen to know that your school has the highest budget in the state, they've brought in a lot of talented teachers and they're teaching you stuff you should already know......I for one am HIGHLY dissapointed.

Yeah, well, I guess this is a good time to tell you that mom is shagging the neighbor. I guess we all get disappointed sometimes.

That doesn't mean you can't acknowledge things that did go right even when you fall short of the ultimate goal. There's middle ground between reaching your goals and complete failure.

2003 was that middle ground. Everything since has been failure. The prospect list keeps shrinking, and the major league win total has nosedived. Sure, some nice things happened this year, but on the whole it's been an utter failure.

I can agree with this statement as well.

Take the Atlanta Braves for example. If I were a Braves fan, I think I would be proud of what the team has accomplished over the last 17 years even though there is only one World Championship to show for it. There has been for that organization a consistent run of success. If the Cubs were to put together such a run, I would be quite satisfied even if it only came with one World Championship. I'd likely be satisfied and proud of such a run even if there were no World Championships, yet such a run would only increase my hunger for one.

Huge difference of course. They've actually won one in their lifetimes, with this front office. And they keep putting themselves in position to win one. The Cubs front office has been inept, and shows no signs of being able to put themselves into position to have a chance.

Oh I understand the difference. I was simply pointing out that there can be measures of success apart from winning the World Series. And, yes, winning the championship should always be the ultimate goal, but I'd take an extended string of success as well.

That being said, I'm not satisfied or proud of what this team has done the last two years. It is quite dissapointing.

That's all well in good, but you generalized all of pro baseball. Teams like the Braves, A's, Twins, etc. aren't failures just because they didn't win it all. Like I said before, there's a difference between not reaching your goal and complete failure(I'm not saying the Cubs have or haven't done any of this).
