As I've said before, the thought of Hendry getting fired and Hughes replacing scares me beyond all comprehension.

Hehehe....I figured you'd like him because of the way he looks at "new technology". Instead of flying the Cubs would be traveling by stagecoach.

He may just mandate that the team go back to gloves without pockets, because "that's the way it was supposed to be". I also picture him saying that like Will Forte playing Zell Miller.

hahahahhaha

i was just wondering if you knew of any names out there that you'd like to see, as i can't really think of any. i'm sure there are superior alternatives to hendry and i only hope that phillips' name doesn't come up should hendry be replaced.

As you are well aware, I am incredibly disenchanted with Hendry. But, however deep that disenchantment runs, I'd go with Hendry 7 days a week before I'd give the reins of my team to Steve Phillips. Twice on Sundays.

100 mil payroll and this is the team we have? Yeah, somebody should be fired. If indeed Baker gets a 2 year extension then Hendry should be fred just for that. Actually, a good GM would have fired Baker already.

Hendry will never be Fred, eh ??

i'm glad the cubs are willing to skip a pitcher's start so maddux can increase the chances of him extending a meaningless record that he already owns from 0% to 5%, but they refuse to skip a pitcher's start so that they can further evaluate their young arms.

i know i'll never forget where i was when mcgriff got that 30th homer!

the only way for me to survive maddux's vesting option is to smoke crack cocaine. we're going to pay him $9M and he will probably have a 5.00+ ERA. like i posted earlier when larry walker is stealing bases on you, your velocity isnt what it once was.

ive penciled him in as 5th starter behind rusch. we could be in huge trouble next year if wood goes down early again. rusch would be pushed up to #3.

Maybe they're hoping he'll have a Wood/Prior injury and decide to retire?

If anyone needs skipped/shutdown it should be Prior then Z. Since they are the future and this season is over shut them down and let the kids take their spots.

as lee corso says....not so fast my friend! 13 wins with 2 starts left. era drops again with another shutout.

why is it such a bad deal that they give greg a shot at 15? what he has he done except take the ball every 5th day, pitch pretty well for a guy who was signed to be a 4-5 starter. he is making a run at winning 30 games in 2 years. it is not his fault what hendry paid him. he is certainly not the reason we haven't won. we all talk about people wanting to play for the cubs and taking a discount..well part of getting that, is doing things for players, treating them with class and not screwing them out of an option when they signed an endloaded contract based on incentives.

One thing I have always appreciated about Maddux is his class. I give him credit for recognizing that his retirement speculation was gaining unwarranted air time and he stiffled it. He could easily have let things ride over the offseason, but he isn't the type of guy that needs that kind of focus.

Is there a chance his ERA could drop under 4 this season?

Maddux has given up 97 earned runs in 210.2 innings. There are a ton of different calculations you could do. But, if he were to pitch 5 and 5 shutout innings in each of his next two starts, respectively, his ERA would be down around 3.95 if I calculated correctly. If he gave up 1 run total in either of those outings, he would be sitting at 3.99.

But, if he were to pitch 5 and 6 shutout innings in each of his next two starts, respectively, his ERA would be down around 3.95 if I calculated correctly. If he gave up 1 run total in either of those outings, he would be sitting at 3.99.

Which would put his post-allstar ERA around 3.10 mark.

I wonder why he has pitched so much better the second half this year (and last if I remember correctly.) Maybe he's like the tin-man and he needs to get his joints loosened up because he's such an old man.

He been that way for the past 4 season. The last 3 he has been 1 run better the 2nd half.

Is there a possiblitity that Maddux might enter a tie game as a reliever to try to get that 15th win? I'm not sure I know what the Cubs would do in that situation.

I think he needs to partner up with Kenny Rogers, letting Rogers pitch the first half of the year and Maddux the second. But let Maddux do all the talking.

Since team photo day is normally in the 2nd half of the season, this could work.

I wondered this myself over the last couple of years and came up with a (obviously highly speculative) possibilty.

Maddux is not a big hulking pitcher ala Clemens. So I am assuming he has never been a big work out guy. When he was younger, because of the type of pitcher he is, he did not need to worry too much about getting into shape each prior to each season. (I am thinking strength training as opposed to cardio) Now that he is older, and less physically strong, maybe he needs to do more strength training in the offseason to get ready. He pitches better in the second half because his workouts with the team and his starts get him to that necessary level of fitness. I am not saying he does not do anything in the offseason to keep himself fit, but maybe as he is older he needs to change the form that preperation takes.

Or maybe he loses focus until the summer TV reruns begin.

I like that theory. He was so concerned about Jin and Sun's relationship on LOST that he couldn't mentally or physically prepare for games until June.
