Oswalt probably should have been in the mix of this discussion.

Probably not.

Here's the final ERA+ marks from BR:

Clemens 221

Pettitte 174

Willis 153

Carpenter 151

Pedro 148

Others of note: Oswalt 141, Zambrano 131, Peavy 134

Santana led the AL with 153, followed by a Millwood/Buehrle tie at 143.

The NL Cy Young will be awarded today, and I expect Carp (erroneously based on wins) will be named the winner.

Dayn Perry, injects an interesting name into the discussion.

The case for Pettitte, to a large degree, depends upon his environment. First, let's look at some key indicators for the NL Cy contenders:

C. Carpenter R. Clemens A. Pettitte D. Willis

K/BB 4.17 2.98 4.17 3.10

IP 241.2 211.1 222.1 236.1

Runs-per-game 3.05 2.17 2.67 3.01

Pettitte ties Carpenter in strikeout-to-walk ratio and finishes second to Clemens in runs-per-game. Now let's consider environment. It's not enough to observe that Minute Maid Park in Houston inflates run scoring; we also need to know how it inflates run scoring.

I'd still rank Clemens ahead of Pettitte, but he does make a good case for him.

Pettitte was good. So was Clemens. So was Carpenter. Whoever wins, wins......... just like always. It's ALWAYS controversial, but a great pitcher wins every year.

If you want to go on wins, Willis should win as he had the most wins in the league as well as a better ERA. If Carp wins, then the Cy Young has no integrity whatsoever because Mark Prior had a better season in 2003 and the award was given to Eric Gagne.

Willis had more wins, but twice as many losses as Carpenter. There are alot of ways to look at it, and somebody's going to be unhappy, no matter who wins it.

If you want to question the integrity of the award, don't start with Carpenter winning it this year (if he does). Go back to last year.
