Looks like all 3 are free agents, and the Cubs need to add a starting pitcher. Since Burnett could be priced out of the Cubs price range, perhaps the Cubs can get one of these guys??? Just let Williams & Hill fight for the 5th spot, and deal off Wood before he goes on the DL again. Either that or make him the closer.

Penny's numbers are - 3.50 ERA, 1.27 Whip and he's 27. He's had some injury problems though.

Weaver's numbers are - 4.34 ERA, 1.21 Whip and he's 28.

Washburn's numbers are - 3.15 ERA, 1.38 Whip and he turns 31 in 2 days.

Yes, yes I know that all 3 benefit from playing in pitcher's parks, and Washburn has a real good defense around him. I'd pass on Washburn, but Weaver and Penny look good for about $5-6 million a year. Weaver kinda reminds me of Clement. Great stuff, but never has really put it all together yet. The LA media has pounded him some, so he could be looking to go elsewhere. Of the 3, Weaver would be my choice.

For once, I'd like to see us go get a pitcher who has great stuff AND has actually put it together.

It's that second part that's so difficult for the Cubs to understand.

How many pitchers are ever available that have both the stuff and have put it all together?

Oh yeah, we can get AJB this offseason...

How much you think he'll get offered though?? My guess is that a team like Baltimore offers him something absurd.

Z & Prior??

Last guy like that who I can remember being available in free agency is Bartolo Colon.

I don't like Weaver, despite the drop in BBs, he has been too prone to leaving that curve over the heart of the plate and his FB isn't good enough to compensate when his offspeed/breaking pitches aren't working.

He's probably a 4/5 starter on a solid staff, he'll be paid as a 2/3 starter most likely.

Washburn reminds me of Rusch, I don't see much of a dropoff in talent or production from Rusch, like Raw said, it is smoke and mirrors.

I do like Penny, I think he can become a steal b/c of his injuries, he can become a real good #3 starter/great #4 on the Cubs next year. But, if he would become a steal b/c of injuries, he'll have to stay healthy, he hasn't proven that yet.

Penny gets undervalued a lot, because he doesn't strike out as many people as his stuff suggests he should. His mechanics are a little wonky, but I like him, and he'd be a nice consolation prize if we can't sign Burnett.

Tim, don't you think that because of the weak free agent pool coming up that AJB will have his pick of whatever fortune teams like the Yankees, Boston and others will throw at him? I just think both the money and contract length are going to be excessive for what we'd be bidding on.

Pedro Martinez in last year's free agent pile.

Another question ~ who do the Yankees overpay and what scraps are left?? Will there be a Yankee vs. Baltimore vs. Boston war for Burnett??

For Penny?? Since Weaver absolutely bombed in NY can't see him going back there.

I doubt the Yankees are huge players, they don't have any money coming off the books do they?

They have Brown, Bernie, Gordon, Felix Rodriguez, and a couple others that make less. Between those 4, they free up over 35 million.

I can see another offseason of overpriced starting pitching coming up.

Bernie Williams and Flash Gordon correct???

Have Kenny Rogers and Matt Morris been giving extensions?? Hopefully some teams go nuts over them and leave Penny and Weaver for the Cubs. :)

Agreed, but that wasn't part of the equation you stated :-P

Seriously though, great pitching is so hard to come by that the really smart teams are the ones who do an excellent job of developing young pitchers and focus on that in their drafting and minor league systems. If a team can do that and then evaluate that talent really well, they can keep at least an above average staff of inexpensive starters, let them go via free agency when the time comes or trade them and "sell high" picking up the good position players they need to fill out the rest of their team.

So what you're trying to say is that Oakland's great at evaluating talent. Agree 100%. :)

Keep in mind folks, Brad Penny signed a 3 year extension in mid-June. Thus, he is not a free agent until after the 2008 season, or maybe 2009 if his option is picked up.

Not me. But I wouldn't mind having Kevin Millwood.

I'd take Millwood. He still has the ability to dominate on any given day. He will likely fly under the radar this offseason, then again....with nothing else available, he could get big money.

Just looked up his numbers and didn't realize he has been so good this year. His lack of success in 03 and 04 may keep him from getting a big deal though. Not a bad option.
