"That series is no more important than winning this series," Matt Morris said. "Actually, the Brewers are ahead, aren't they?"

oh that matt morris and his sly wit!

One of them may have been letting Grudzielanek leave. He is hitting .302 with seven homers and 47 RBIs, and La Russa has called him the best second baseman in the league.

umm....no.

"It's a situation where they have a lot talent, especially with their arms, and they haven't figured it out yet," Grudzielanek said. "They haven't got the missing people in there yet. Over the past few years they've made some changes and obviously they weren't the best."

grudz sounds a little bitter.

"My guess is the Cubs will play their four best games the next four days," La Russa said.

i'll take that bet.

The guy is having a great year. Who do you feel is doing better in the NL?

I figure Grudz is pretty happy where he is now.

He's probably happy he's on a winning team, but if I recall correctly, Grudz LOVED playing in Chicago. That would make anyone bitter.

I hope we can right the ship and at least make the end of the season interesting. But going against the Cards while we're on a 7 game losing streak isn't exactly comforting. If the Cubs keep losing, I see frustration mounting, and I have a feeling there will be another bean ball war. It's sad, but that's my gut feeling.

You have me there, although I would never want him on my team.

Anything is possible when the Cards/Cubs match up against each other. I really hope you are wrong though.

Yeah, for as good as he is, he's one guy I wouldn't want on my team either.

I hope I'm wrong too and that we just see a great series of hard nosed baseball. But frustration has to be starting to become an issue in that clubhouse. And the Cards always find a way inside the Cubs' heads. Should be interesting to see either way.

TLR will have his guys ready to go. I hope Dusty does the same. However it turns out I just hope it is a good series.

Going by Runs Created:

Kent

Utley

Giles

Freel

Castillo

Loretta

Walker

Durham

Weeks

Counsell

Biggio

Aurilia

Have all been better than Grudzielanek.

LOL, I was about to make the same post... if you go by something like Runs Created or OPS or VORP, he's actually been average or a little worse... but if you look at batting average then he's probably been one of the best!!!

Posted

Looking at VORP stats makes quite a difference but I was looking at more than batting averages.

Watching him play every day and seeing him step up while 4 of the starting 8 are out of the lineup definitely goes into that line of thinking as well.

Posted
I'd take Grudzielanek over Kent, because Kent has the range of a tree stump.

I'm not sure what the difference in runs created is, but I'm sure it's way more than the difference in runs saved by Grudz in the field versus runs lost by Kent's defense. Let's remember that Kent's playing half his game in an extreme pitcher's park.

Also, if you aren't a fan of Jeff Kent, how about Chase Utley? He's been miles ahead of Grudz at the plate this year too.

I have no idea why the Cubs have not taught Morris some rules about keeping his mouth shut. If there's one player that needs to get hit it is him. Watching him throw at Corey's head and behind Lee is a clear example why I feel the Cubs have become soft as far as protecting teammates. They knocked hitters down in '03 when they took 4 of 5, they kicked around STL, now they've become soft.

If players run their mouths, make them pay.

I suppose you don't think Zambrano or Wood had anything to do with any of those purpose pitches either. The Cubs aren't free of blame from all of that.

Why can't we just hope for a good, clean series?

That sounds like the Tony LaRussa line of thinking. He has been on fire this month, mostly because everything he hits is falling in, but in June he was horrendous and July he was merely bad. I recall the Cards having some key players missing during those months as well. The problem with seeing someone play every day is that you tend to overvalue them. The best way to compare players in an objective manner is to use statistics, rather than give unfair weight to a guy you know and root for.

No, not when a players runs his mouth like that, this is the same person who said he'd put one in Sosa's ear...

There's a difference between a brushback and throwing at a player's head, he was throwing at Patterson's head.

I've always said, if I ever had the chance, I would hit him. From past experiences, I've never had a problem throwing at a player when justified. I think the Cubs would be justified for thowing at Morris.

I would hope that is in the past as is Zambrano's hitting Edmonds 2 times. It has been a long time since the Cubs and Cardinals had a heated moment and I hope it stays that way.

What about the comments Zambrano and Prior made a few seasons ago? The Cubs are far from blameless in this business. It got out of hand and it should be over.

What's wrong with a little bitterness between the rivals? If it's not going to be competitive as far as the pennant race goes, then it might as well be full of anger fueled by a righteous jealousy. :P

Zambrano deserved what he got as far as the ejection, but he had no reason to throw at Edmonds, but if I was a Cards fan I'd want one of my pitchers to throw at Z.

The Cubs deserve their fair of the blame as well in the past, right now, Morris does. I never understood why a pitcher would throw at a hitter that wasn't a pitcher, despite being guilty of it myself.

I hope the Cubs do something to bring back some life, it if takes putting a couple of Cards on the ground, so be it. If the standings don't motivate the Cubs, they have to find a way to do it.

I would rather they win, which they did last year, while Z and Hawkins blew up.

yeah, that's why the cubs lost.

i sometimes forget how much i hate the cardinals...until they have a series with the cubs and all their fans come out of the woodwork.

Cards need to show up for the next game. The only reason we've been winning with this AAA lineup is solid pitching and good defense. The most you can expect from this lineup is 4 runs tops. The crappy pitching/defense and bloop hits needs to stop.

Absolutely laughable.

Morris said exactly what he should have said. The Brewers were indeed ahead of the Cubs, when he made that statement. If he said anything else, he'd be insulting the Brewers.

Larussa loves his 2nd baseman, and speaks highly of him. THAT'S bulletin board material?

Grudz basically says that things haven't worked out for the Cubs. Well........ have they?

As for "teaching Morris a lesson", my advice is to do it on the field, with the bats. That's the problem with the Cubs. They're more concerned about "proving a point", as opposed to proving their a good team.

I'm sure Morris was concerned with giving the Brewers credit when he made that comment.

The Cubs aren't the ones who have hit anyone this series, or thrown at players' heads in the past. They're 5-3 v. the Cards this year, the only team that's beaten the Cards with consistency this year besides Philadelphia.
