As result, his bullpen has been overworked, leading to him using the most rested reliever as opposed to one offering the best matchup. He actually said best matchup! That leads me to believe he at least looks at the statistics? Or is that a far too extreme conclusion?

I think by "best matchup" he means righty-righty or lefty-lefty. If he looked at stats, Walker (who hits lefties pretty well) would be playing today.
