Mike Murphy on the Score was talking a few minutes ago that George Offman has learned Corey Patterson will be recalled from Iowa for Tuesday's game against the Reds. No word on who's being sent down or DFA's (Hollandsworth? ). Edited by Mark Prior's Calves

Yay! I hope he does well and isn't treated harshly by the fans if he gets off to a slow start.

BTW, I'd rather have Macias DFA'd. Hollandsworth is a good bench guy to have around.

I'd expect Cedeno to be sent down since his only job nowadays is to bring gatorade to Macias and Neifi.

Good to hear Corey is on his way back. Not that it will help at this point though.

Macias? But the dude saved us, man. He can play every position, ye know? We can't get into the world series without him, dude.

*expects D-Rays to sign him if he gets released*

Just a public service announcement...his name is Ofman.

Thanks, I thought it might be but was too lazy to look it up.

Im good friends with his nephew.

That's good news. I'm going to Wednesday's I-Cubs game, wonder if he'll be playing or in-transit...probably the latter.

They were talking about this on the Score earlier, and an interesting point was raised. I'm not quite sure how to take it, I'll just throw it out there and respond later.

Corey really wasn't hitting until they DL'ed Hairston and didn't call him back up. Then he started having multiple hit-games (I think he had like 4 rbi tonight) and being the player we all knew he could be. Is that a coincidece, or maybe a strike against his work ethic?

Anyway, if he's hitting I'm glad he's getting called back up. But now Murton gets pushed further out, unless Burnitz gets benched (not freaking likely).

Hey, I was right about something.

Corey was taken out of the I-Cubs game after his third hit. A little obvious, but still.

And this is too soon. The fans at Wrigley are going to be mighty pissed at the team for the first time and he's just starting to hit at Iowa.

I'd have left him down there another week.

Corey had a slump at AAA that culminated with him sitting out a couple games because of a respiratory problem, which likely had something to do with the slump. As soon as he came back, he started hitting. I think it's a coincidence.

Patterson before Hairston's injury:

7/28: Still recovering from respiratory problem

7/29: 2 for 4, 2B

7/30: 2 for 4, 2B

7/31: 1 for 5

8/2: 1 for 3, 2 BB

Total: .375/.444/.500

Patterson after Hairston's injury:

8/4: 2 for 4

8/5: 2 for 4, BB

8/6: 3 for 4

8/7: 1 for 3, HBP

Total: .533/.588/.533

He's been better since Hairston's injury, but on the whole he's just been raking since he returned to the lineup. Throw in tonight's performance, and he's hitting .500/.553/.735 since those off days.

The Daily Herald agrees:

The Cubs will recall Corey Patterson today after the center fielder continued his surge Monday with Class AAA Iowa, blasting 2 home runs and driving in 4 runs against Las Vegas.

Patterson was optioned July 7 to Iowa after hitting just .232 with an on-base percentage of .270 in 83 games with the Cubs.

He has batted .297 in 24 games with Iowa.

After Jose Macias struggled in center field this weekend, Cubs manager Dusty Baker shuffled his outfielders Monday, moving Jeromy Burnitz from right to center and Matt Lawton from left to right.

Rookie Matt Murton started his 11th game of the season in left.

Well, personally, if we're going to call the season a loss soon, I'd like to see Beernutz DFA'd, and see if we can move him to a contender. So in that scenario, i'd finish the year with Corey in center, Lawton in right, and Murton in left.

The right thing to do would be to ship Cedeno or Murton back to AAA for some playing time, which means they won't do that.

Cedeno was sent down for Corey...per ESPN webpage.

May as well. Cedeno wasn't going to get any playing time with Nomar back.

Corey's stint of .297 hitting in Iowa, taking walks, and batting .500 over his last 8 or 10 games or whatever, just goes to prove that the problem Corey faces in the major leagues is strictly mental. (news flash, I know) Now that there's pretty strong numeric proof of this, I say that if he doesn't straighten himself out, we either see what we can get for him by next year's deadline or just outright release him. Now that he has had this time in Iowa and was so successful there, the pressure is on even more.

Heaven help us if he strikes out in his first at-bat.
