The Cardnials are going to give their starters some time off and have Reyes come up and do some spot starts. He makes his debut tomorrow night. I am excited, he is their top pitching prospect and if he can come up and do well he should earn a spot in the rotation next year.

Whose being sent down? Seabol?

I watched him pitch a late spring training game this year against the Astros on the Astros TV station and they were raving about him.

I got a feeling this may be an audition for Marquis' spot in the rotation. I of course have nothing to back that up.

That would be sweet.

I of course have nothing to back that up

Other than Marquis' performance/attitude of course.

Aug. 8: Rototimes.com has learned that Anthony Reyes (P) StL is in Milwaukee with the Cardinals and is likely to make a spot start on Tuesday night or Wednesday afternoon. Tony La Russa said after Sunday's game that he'd like to give everyone in his rotation an extra day of rest as the Cardinals are scheduled to play 30 games in 31 days this month. Reyes is the Cardinals' top prospect and is 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 104 2/3 innings at Triple-A Memphis this season. His last start for the Redbirds came on Thursday, so he's right on schedule to pitch on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Yeah, other than that. :D

Even though I would be excited to watch him pitch, why start his arbitration clock on just a spot start unless it is an audition. If not I think its a bad move by the Cards.

Were not gonna use Marquis in the playoffs anyway, Suppan will be the 4th starter if its needed. If Reyes can pitch well and we could somehow trade Marquis over the waiver wire for a hitter I would be very happy. But I dont see that happening.

that would be nice but I don't think Marquis would clear waivers.

Cards will call up top prospect

MILWAUKEE -- The Cardinals will promote righthanded starting pitcher Anthony Reyes from Class AAA Memphis and he is expected to be their starting pitcher Tuesday night against the Brewers.

Reyes, 23, is the top pitching prospect in the Cardinals organization. He was 7-4 at Memphis with a 3.44 earned-run average for 19 starts covering 104 2/3 innings. Reyes allowed 88 hits and 28 walks to go with 106 strikeouts.

It was not immediately known what move the Cardinals will make to clear roster space for Reyes.

Cards manager Tony La Russa said Sunday that he expected someone other than one of his five regular starters to pitch Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

That would push Jeff Suppan back to a Wednesday start, and give Mark Mulder, Jason Marquis, Chris Carpenter and Matt Morris an extra day's rest going into the four-game series at Chicago that starts Thursday.

The Cards are in a stretch of 30 games in 31 days; their final day off in August is next Monday.

Reyes, 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, was a 15th-round draft pick out of the University of Southern California in 2003.

He started in Class A Palm Beach last season but was quickly promoted to Double-A Tennessee, where he went 6-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 12 starts and 102 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings.

I think this is the Dan Haren style tryout for this season. If he's good, he could spot start/long relief down the stretch and in the playoffs and be in the rotation next season.

BTW - Remember in the offseason when it was either Marquis or Haren to be rumored in the Mulder deal? ](*,)

I said it then and I mean it even more now. Marquis sucks, Haren doesn't.

My prediction: Marquis is eventually sent to the bullpen. He causes a fuss much in the same way that he did in Atlanta when sent to the bullpen. This pisses off LaRussa and Duncan and he's left off the playoff roster.

6.1 Innings, 2h, 2 er, 1bb, 5k's in his major league debut. He looked really good tonight. He started to lose a little of his control towards the end, but he still ended up with 50 strikes on 76 pitches. Very good. I really didn't think he would look this good. His poise was very Prioresque, as was his delivery. Now all the kid needs to do is learn how to bend the hat and he'll be set.

Did he still have the 2 toned high socks?
