Don't know that this will create a lot of discussion because it's minor, but I read Joe Morgan's ESPN chat this morning. Here's a question regarding Ryno:

Travis (Indy): What did you think of Ryan Sandberg's induction speech? I thought there was a good message for players of this era.

Joe Morgan: (10:06 AM ET ) I actually didn't get to see the speech but I saw all the reaction to it. Sometimes we have to be careful, myself included, in how we approach today's player and how we deliver a message to them. Sometimes they take it the wrong way and take it as pure criticism as opposed to constructive criticsm. We'll have to wait and see how they take it.

PS - Joe, you didn't watch it? You're a HOFer, BEST player in the HISTORY of all things Sport. and you didn't watch it?!

I'm sure Jon Miller would have let you have the night off. A break from Super Joe could do us ALL some good.

It wasn't centered around him and he didn't write the speech, so it wasn't "Important enough" to him.

That is stunning to me. I mean, excerpts of the speech have been played over and over in the media, not to mention the fact that his employer has been pimping it for some time now.

Morgan's hatred of Sandberg is utterly transparent. It is among the most embarrassing grudges in professional sports. Everyone recognizes Morgan's actions as slights. Its gone beyond absurd.

Morgan's comments further demonstrate why he is an ineffective analyst. He virtually admits that he cowtows to today's player, rather than providing fair and honest commentary.

Its no wonder that Johnny Bench is my favorite player of all time, as he and Morgan are pretty much diametrically opposed on everything.

Sean (NYC): How is your golf game? Strong like bull or needs some work?

Joe Morgan: (10:29 AM ET ) My game is REAL good! I'm playing better than I ever have. I just get to play more often now. My handicap is well under five.

As if he'd have answered any other way.

"How are your house painting skills Joe?"

"Pablo Picasso aint got @#%# on me man. I'm the best."

Hypocrisy, Joe Morgan is thy name. He doesn't want to cast a blanket statement that may be misinterpreted by today's stars, but then he says this about this generation's HOF aspirations:

"I have reservations, not only about Rafael Palmeiro but a lot of the guys who are going to come in with numbers obtained during this era. I think there just has to be a penalty -- I just don't know what that is yet."

What a jerk.

Another Cubs question:

Charleston, Illinois: Do you think that the Cubs will eventually trade Kerry Woods? Should they trade him?

Joe Morgan: (10:48 AM ET ) I don't think they would trade him. The bullpen is an option. They wouldn't be able to get good value for him anyway if they tried to deal him. I think they are just looking for the righ fit and hoping he gets over his arm problem.

"oh ya, and PS - Ryne Sandberg stinks."

I don't know about Kerry Woods, but I know Kerry Wood has a no-trade clause.

Well of course he didn't "get" to see the speech. He was busy with his "family commitment." And of course he hasn't gotten to see any of it since -- he's been too busy. I'm sure he would love to see the speech, he just hasn't had time. Yeah, right. Buy that, and I've got some swamp land to sell you. Could Morgan BE any stupider?! Arrogant putz.

For the first time in a long time, I actually enjoyed the Sunday Night broadcast. Jon Miller's always very good, but Steve Stone provided ten times Morgan's usual insight and Steve Phillips managed to not say anything that stupid.

Why DOES Morgan hate Ryno so? Is it as simple as "Little Joe has big Ego", or something else?

It's a crying shame that a guy can't be booted out of the HOF for being small-minded or just plain stupid about baseball in general. Joe Morgan would have at least two counts against him.

WTF is with Cub fans (assuming that's why they are asking cub questions) messing up cub names? Ryan? Woods? WTF?

I haven't noticed it much, but when someone does mispell/pronounce a Cub's name is (Jerry) Harriston, or some variant of that. BTW, who's Ryan?

Morgan saw the reaction, but not the speech itself? Sounds to me like he refuses to read/hear/watch Sandbergs speech, just like he refused to attend the induction. The guy is just petty.

Kind of sounds similar to him not reading Moneyball, and just reacting to the reaction to it.

If I didn't know better, I'd think he'd never played baseball and was just reacting to what he overhears the six year old kid a few rows in front of him pointing out to his dad.

Hehe, now I feel kinda stupid. My mind just didn't make the connection of "Ryan" to Sandberg with it spelled wrong.

Also, Diffusion, your assesment of Morgan sounds spot-on :D
