I think the important thing we are missing here is Bob was concerned Dempster was beginning to get a blister because of the sweat and the number of pitches he threw. Not saying he had a blister just saying Bob thought it was a possibility with a closer throwing like 45-50 pitches in one inning. Hopefully we won't need him tonight.

This is what happens when you use a Canadian as your closer. Can't handle the heat. [/dusty]

BTW, did anybody ask our brilliant field general why he didn't sent Rothschild out there even ONCE to talk to Dempster last night?

I haven't looked at Dempster's usage pattern recently, but it seems he's been used infrequently as of late (dating back to the all-star break). Perhaps that has a slight effect on his control. Again, I haven't looked at the numbers, and I've missed a few games the last couple of weeks, but it might be something to consider.

But yeah, it was hot as hell last night. I'd say that's why he was sweating

Who cares if Dempster sweats. He got the job done and has been a godsend to us compared to Latroy.

Thanks to Perez chasing 2 pitches that would have been called balls.

Look, all I'm saying is that it must be something that either Brenly's noticed or its been proven somehow, that Dempster sweats more than what the heat/dewpoints help produce. Why would Brenly not have just said "with the heat and humidity, its creating sweat on Ryan's hand"? IIRC, Bob said something to the effect of "because of Dempster's profuse amounts of sweat on his throwing hand, he can't get an effective grip on the ball to throw his splitter the way he wants to."

I didn't really pay much attention to how much he was using the rosin bag, but I will note that Ron was pleading with Rothschild (or Barrett) to go out to the mound after Bell struck out to give Dempster a breather and to allow him to cool off. The adjective he used was "dripping" and I really don't think he was too far off. I'm not sure on this, but weren't most of the pitches he was missing with breaking balls? It seemed like ihe was having much less trouble challenging hitters with the fastball (I think he reached 97 on one) than the breaking pitches, which could be attributed to sweat.

Yeah, his fastball was absolutely filthy last night. He actually hit 98 if you believe the comcast display. Howard looked completely overpowered by the fastball, he wasn't even coming close to catching up.

Is Dempster signed for next year?

Nope -- he'll be eligible to become a Free Agent after this season.

So the Cubbies may be looking for another closer in 2006...interesting, thanks.

Dempster is Hendry's guy...he got him fresh off TJS...no way he lets him walk after he finally has a solid, young (27-28) closer. He'll be resigned. I think Ryan likes it here, and the Cubs like him here.

I hope you're right but this might be Dempsters big chance to make a lot of cash and I wouldn't blame him if he went for it.

A list of "Hendry Guys":

Lee (locked up to a 3 year deal)

Ramirez (ditto)

Barrett (also)

Dempster

Williamson

Guys he made trades for, or took a risk on.

Oh no, another one of the anti-Barretts...I hope you're being sarcastic, because Barrett's done far more good than bad while a Cub. One real bad play does not make him a bad player.

I really think Remlinger needs to be cut this week. He just isn't cutting it this year. His poor outing last night just solidifies that I think. I'd send Mitre down to make room for the other pitcher. Cedeno for Nomar makes sense.

The other move I would consider is calling up Wellemeyer. He's been pitching very well lately. I'd like to see Novoa work on his breaking ball down in Triple A. I think Novoa has the potential to be a very good bullpen guy, but he lacks consistency yet, particularly on his breaking ball.

Wood for Mitre

Williamson for Remlinger

Nomar for Cedeno

I'd probably also DL Hairston and bring Patterson back up. No more Macias in center. I miss Corey's D.

Moving Novoa for Wellemeyer due to consistancy is hypocritical lol...Wellemeyer showed flashes of brilliance as well, but never did it on a consistant basis. He could be the long man in the pen, allowing us to use Rusch in matchup situations if needed.

they were talking today about sending down the guys with options. except for cedeno why waste an option? remingler should go...at this point why not give his innings to ohman and rusch? he is clearly one of the weaker performers. in 3 weeks we have september call ups why waste an option for 3 weeks. macias or wilson could go also.

Options are a yearly thing, not a number of call-ups thing. You can call a guy up and down as many times as you want for three years once you bring him up the first time so sending Cedeno down won't burn an option.
