This article really makes me sick. I'm sure that this is supposed to be an article about black pride, and that many blacks have to deal with unfair media pressure. This may or may not be true, and that opens a whole new can of worms.

However, Mr. Jackson is doing a disservice to the black community with this article. His own personal racism is clearly bleeding through. What's that Scoop? Dusty's awful managerial decision blew the game again? Oh, Dusty, they don't want you out because you're a horrible manager, you just happen to be black.

Any such talk about Robinson being canned in DC, Scoop? Lloyd in Pitsburgh?

Gimme a break.

He says that he doesn't speak for Baker, yet he somehow attemps to despite the fact that Dusty disagrees with him... :?

Let Dusty fight his own battles... such as the ones that exist, (e.g. getting into the playoffs).

What a disgrace...

Have no fear, you'll catch him on Around The Horn later and he'll say something so stupid that you'll have no choice but to hate him again.

I sent Scoop the following email in response to his article:

Uh, Scoop, your Dusty / Cox comparison is way off. Cox has had as many injuries and issues in Atlanta over the last two years as Dusty has, yet they keep winning, and not just a couple of games over .500, but winning division titles. I think this in large part the case b/c Cox does not make up excuses for his team. Dusty does, and does so often. Its very frustrating.

Moreover, where's your proof that the Chicago press are biggots? They might be, but as near as I can tell, you made a naked allegation without anything substantial to back it up. Most of the Chicago press (Marriotti being a prominent exception) simply reflects the frustration that all of Cubs Nation feels after 100 years of futility and the 2003 NLCS.

I think you made some pretty big assumptions to support what is essentially a baseless argument. Chicago can stand proud as one of the few cities that has minorities as managers / coaches of three of the five major professionals sports teams. Furthermore, Skiles replaced Bill Cartwright and Dusty (essentially) replaced Don Baylor.

You might want to fish for the race card in another city.

Same reason we Hoosier fans want Mike Davis out as coach, right? It's not the sub-par record, the lack of effort, the poor decisions... As a baseball and basketball fan, I'm MUCH more concerned about race than winning.... ugh

As Ron Santo would say, "JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE"

It was truly amazing...I read that article by Mariotti and agreed completely. It actually sounded somewhat similar to the letter I wrote to ESPN. Props to Mariotti for finally writing an article that I like.

You know the sad thing....Scoop Jackson got what he wanted.....a reaction. That is what journalist---and I used that loosely with Scoop Jackson---wants.....reaction. He got each and everybody here to read that article. You kow the saying, "There is no such thing as bad publicity", and he used it.

I just finally read this. That is one of the saddest pieces of writing I have ever seen. The whole racism angle had me laughing really hard.

I emailed him this:

It's interesting that you use the Cox comparison to close your article, because if there's one thing that's evident, it's that Cox is a much better manager than Baker is. He's had as many, if not more, significant injuries and underperforming players this season as the Cubs have, but has gotten far more from his team, and has them in first place, and second in the entire NL. He's done this starting as many as four rookies at one time. Baker can't manage to get his youngsters regular playing time. You talk about how miraculous it is that Baker's got a .500 team with losing 5 All-Stars. Let me ask you this; how many teams have five All-Stars? Not a lot, let me tell you, and generally, those teams manage to play around .500. I don't blame Baker for the lack of greater achievement, but this is hardly worthy of the reverence you administer. It's just treading water.

This article reads as though you came up with an idea, sans support, and tried to come up with data to support it. Unless you want to blame Baker's tendency to bat Perez/Patterson/Macias in the top two spots, or bat a pitcher in the bottom of the inning only to bring in a reliever in the next, or keep youngsters on the bench while veterans play miserably (Perez, Hollandsworth)--on being black, then I see no justification whatsoever for blaming the head-calling on race.

In an ESPN chat with Scoop Jackson he had this to say in his defense:

Hurley (NYC): Scoop, what did you think of Jim Calis's comments that your article on Dusty Baker was "garbage"?

Scoop: It's cool. everyone has room for what they feel is right or wrong. the Dusty thing is just my opinion on the subject and how I see it. Am I wrong? Possibly. But until I'm proven different, i have to stand by my feelings and beliefs.

Here's Jim Callis's take:

Shawn(Illinois): I was wondering what your response is to Scoop Jackson's article about the Chicago media and Dusty Baker?

Jim Callis: I live in Illinois, and I thought it was garbage. Dusty Baker was what the Cubs needed in 2003, but since then he has not made his players accountable for anything, and it shows. To say that there's sentiment against Baker because he's black is ridiculous. That sentiment exists because people up here, fans and columnists, don't think Baker is doing a good job, not because most of the columnists and talk-show hosts are white. Also, if a white manager had made a comment similar to what Baker said about blacks being more suited to play under the hot sun, do you think that white manager would still have his job? Scoop Jackson's article was garbage.

I don't know if anybody's posted a link to this article yet, but it really bothers me.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=jackson/050802&num=2

He basically says that since all the columnists in Chicago are white, that Dusty is being framed for being a bad manager, when in reality he's really good. I'm writing him a letter right now (there's a link at the end of the story) and I think it would be good if other people would too. Also, if anybody knows how to send a letter to ESPN, I'd appreciate that too.

Again, sorry if this has already been posted.

Thanks... I wonder why ESPN is keeping the article on the front page for so long.

Probably cuz they're black

Yeah. And when I criticize Dusty it's because I secretly hate black people.

Scoop's next article: NSBB should be shut down. Its a hot bed of racism towards all people of color. And they hate Italians, as evidenced by their distatste for the Cardinals and Tony LaRussa.

I do regret not pointing out that I was black in my email to Scoop; it's entirely possible it was disregarded as the meritless rants of an unknowingly racist white man. Not that I expect he would have paid it any mind, anyway.
