probably because no gm in their right mind is going to tell the 100% gods honest truth to a reporter.

Lawton might be someone he'd like to keep around. He certainly won't cost as much as his last contract. With Nomar at SS, there are only 3 positions to get a lead off guy from. If Patterson comes back to CF, that leaves two, LF and 2nd.

I agree, I hope that Hendry signs him to another year.

I don't like how people are saying he is our LF. Ahh, Hairston has sad to say been horrible since being the leadoff man. Murton needs ABs, aghhhh

is there anyway to make a waiver move for griffey, for a package of

From rotoworld and PAY attention to the bolded part of the statement.

Cubs acquired outfielder Matt Lawton from the Pirates for outfielder Jody Gerut.

We'll guarantee taking on Lawton's salary through next year gave the Cubs more pause here than giving up Jody Gerut.

This tells me, the Cubs have Lawtons' rights till NEXT yr. So the Cubs technically are not getting a rental.

Rotoworld is wrong. Lawton is only under contract through this season.

I was pretty sure Lawton's contract was done at the end of this year also. That is unless there was some special thing Pittsburgh did by trading for him in the offseason, like put in a guaranteed extra year. But, I doubt it.

Would be nice to see the Cubs extend Lawton, as he address the leadoff spot. 1. He gets on base. 2. He steals bases. 3. Dusty has to like that he has speed and is a vet.

The odd man out may be Murton, as the Cubs will probably look to add more power in the outfield. Murton isn't some 5 tool guy, so I'm not upset. He'd be special if he was a 2b, ss, cf or catcher. HowevAh, he's an lf, which makes him average. Sorry.

No, because Hairston and the prospects would get claimed.

Then why didn't the Cardinals' prospects get claimed last year when they did the Walker deal?

the cubs should sign giles next year, re-sign burnitz and play him in center, and let murton be the starting LF.

How about this lineup:

Walker

Giles

Lee

Aram

Burnitz

Nomar

Murton

Barret

looks good to me. ORRR keep Lawton

Here's my guess at what they do....

2006 lineup ~ Lawton, Nomah, Giles, Lee, ARam, Walker, Patterson & Barrett.

Lawton, Nomah and Giles fit Trib m.o. They won't sign long-term, expensive deals. Howevah, they're older and Nomah and Lawton are injury prone. I don't think they'll give up on Patterson and give him another year, but he's probably holding down the fort for Pie.

well, i guess i forgot about pie and patterson. i honestly think patterson will be traded in the offseason (the yankees?), and i doubt pie would get any playing time whatsoever over burnitz. we'll have to see what happens, but i really want giles. sign him to a two year contract or something, and give murton a shot somewhere.

It will be very difficult to sign Giles to a 2-year deal. Very difficult.

Does anybody think this "mid-afternoon" deadline is a waste of time for everybody involved? I remember the deadline being around mid-night thus every team could HAVE every possible moment to try and make a trade work.

The way I see it, the Cubs will decide whether to keep him or Burny at the end of the year. Murton will be given left field if he continues to play well. Pie will be give a shot at center against Patterson coming up next year. If Pie beats out Patterson, then Patterson will either be traded or be the fourth outfielder. Lawton or Burney will then man one of the corner outfield positions.

I think only guys on the 25-man roster have to go thru waivers.

Could be wrong though.

I beleive its the 40 man, not the 25.
