You can read Will Carroll's rumor mill that is updated periodically throughout the day at BP(all of BP's content is free for the next week). Carroll hasn't been that reliable in the past, but as a rumor loving guy myself, I found it my duty to pass it along.

From Tuesday:

"The Pirates are clearly a seller. There's a good bit of action on Matt Lawton, Kip Wells, Mark Redman, and Jose Mesa. Lawton would likely be the first to go. He nearly went to the Cubs last week, but the demands were too high and the Cubs went to Jody Gerut instead."

And from last night/today:

"Two names that have recently started grinding through the mill: Chad Billingsley and Corey Patterson."

"The Angels aren't yet pressing the panic button. Still, they're stunned at how quickly Steve Finley has declined. What was once a surplus of outfielders is now a collection of guys who play center field badly. Along with the Orioles and Rangers, the Angels would love to have Mike Cameron. Failing that, they'll be calling to check back on Corey Patterson."

Remember, take these for what their worth, Carroll hasn't been very reliable on trade rumors in the past.

Anaheim's loaded w/ prospects, but I can't really think of any everyday players who may be available and could help the Cubs... Now throw a third team in there wanting prospects and a deal could work. Perhaps they could help the Cubs work out a deal w/ SF for Schmidt.

I'd take Brendan Donnelly.

I'm shocked that the Angels haven't entered the AJ Burnett sweepstakes.....

Yep, they need another pitcher, with Escobar out. Perhaps Chicago, Florida and Anaheim can work something out.

Donnelly was the first thing that popped into my mind when the Angels were brought up. Some how I dont think we would be able to get Brandon Wood :D With K-Rod healthy moving Shields into the set up role, Donnelly is back to the 7th inning and less valuable. That would be a big improvement for this year as well as the future. We've seen how effective and intimidating the Lidge/Dotel/Wagner can be in the NL central, and how pathetic our bullpen has been this year. With Williamson/Donnelly/Dempster being supported by Wood, Wuertz, and Novoa that would be a studly pen (and I guess Remmy if Baker wants to go with 12 pitchers). Send Mitre down to AAA to get steady work and be ready to come up should Hill falter. Send Rusch along with Patterson to the Angels, maybe throw in a pitching prospects for one of their position prospects. I guess depending how good we give up we might be able to get someone decent. Nick Gourneault looks interesting, pretty similar numbers to Dubois but isn't one of their highly sought after prospects. Since relievers are had to come by we will have to overpay but Donnelly is some one who can turn be a stud set up man in the NL for years to come(and specificallyu in Wrigley, IIRC hes a ground ball pitcher). And if we can get another Dubois, who hasn't even used one year of options yet, bonus.

Anaheim could use a lefty like Rusch. I'd want another everyday player though, if Patterson and Rusch are moving. Patterson is one of Hendry's best trading pieces.

Corey & Rusch for Colon please.

Why dont we ask for Kendry as well? :D Yeah, Rusch would be perfect for the Angels, and this year starting pitching is almost as difficult to come by as relievers. I've been all for a big left fielder, but I really think this trade would help the team more and especially in the future as Donnelly doesnt become a FA until after 2007. Plus if I was either team we are looking at for a corner bat (Cinci, TB) I wouldnt be looking for Patterson back, I'd be looking to restock the farm with a near ready and a high reward lower ball pitching prospect. We have plenty of guys who have become expendable in the acquisitions of Williams, Aardsma, and Novoa. Welly and/or Ice need to be moved. This is Wellys last year of options (I believe) so like Francis Beltran, he should be moved at the deadline. Ice has another year still(and hes sucking this year so he probably has little value). So I'd be for putting a package of Welly, Marshall/Nolasco, Greive for Huff, whos been on fire (as expected) in the second half. And he doesn't become a FA until after 2006.

Well this will get torn up but here goes.... :)

Anaheim deals Donnelly, McPherson and another good prospect..

Anaheim gets Burnett, Patterson, Rusch..

Florida deals Burnett, Pierre and Encarnacion.

Florida gets McPherson, Hairston, Mitre, Cub reliever, & Anaheim prospect.

Cubs deal Patterson, Rusch, Mitre, Hairston, and reliever

Cubs get Pierre, Encarnacion & Donnelly

I think Anaheim saved up some money for the deadline and I think they aren't as high on McPherson and would have no problem w/ Figgins at 3rd for a while. Patterson solidifies their d, and they can go for it all w/ Burnett.

Florida folds the tent and deals guys who are probably gone anyway after this year, and get some prospects... Who knows.. Maybe Hairston provides a sparkplug. I have no idea what they do w/ Lowell..

Cubs get some "Dusty guys" and improve the pen. Lineup ~ Pierre, Nomar, Lee, Burnitz, ARam, Walker, Encarnacion and Barrett. Not bad.

From Tuesday: Lawton would likely be the first to go. He nearly went to the Cubs last week, but the demands were too high and the Cubs went to Jody Gerut instead."

I saw that yesterday and was a little surprised. It seems as if Lawton and Gerut would have very different roles with this team. Gerut seems more like a pickup mainly for the future, who can also help out off the bench and with some spot starts. You have to imagine that Lawton would have been plugged into LF and leadoff right away.

Maybe Hendry wanted Dusty to plug Gerut into LF against righties right away... and Dusty had other ideas.

That surprised me too. Love to know what Pittsburgh was asking for Lawton. The guy's never really impressed me. I'd rather have Murton starting with Gerut giving him a day off once in awhile and Hollandsworth back in the role he excels at, No. 1 LH PH.

Gerut has to be worked into the lineup slowly so he can have success. You have to know by now that Baker is using him the right way since the guy doesn't even have a hit yet.

Carroll happens to have a very good source in the Cubs front office this year. Therefore I was glad to see that we have no interest in Soriano.
