It may seem out of the realm of possibility now, but with talks with the Red/White Sox faltering, could Jim Hendry look at AJ Burnett as a potential trade candidate? The Marlins' asking price could be too steep, as I don't see a combination of major league ready pitchers plus pitching prospects that the Cubs could come up with unless Mitre/Hill and others are involved. I don't think Hendry wants to gamble their futures away for a rental. Any thoughts?

Hendry has said he's not really looking for rentals at all. Of course, he could be lying, but I like the approach of looking to the future, given where we are right now. We definitely don't want to trade away two of our (supposedly) major league-ready pitchers for a short term solution on a team whose chances of the playoffs - let alone the world series - are debatable at best.

Burnett would definitely pick up where Wood left off. And heck, if we sign him to an extension, all the better.

If not, oh well, next June we'll hopefully get a 1st rounder and a sandwich pick for him.

I believe that any team that wants Burnett will also have to take on Lowell and a significant part of his contract. Given his performance this year, and the fact that we have Aramis, bringing on Burnett+Lowell seems like a steep price to get a half-season of Burnett.

Burnett would be a great short and long term solution. I just don't think its possible for the Cubs to get him to fit either. I had heard whoever traded for him would want to get him signed to an extension, thus lessening the chance of the Cubs getting him in the off-season for the long term. And I just don't think the Cubs could/would want to put together the package the Marlins are looking for him.

i think the Cubs easily have more to offer for Burnett then the White Sox and Red Sox. As long as we know that he would be signed to an extension, i'd be all for getting Burnett.

The Cubs already have enough injury prone starters in the rotation, not worth the risk. Fill that spot in the rotation from within and get an outfield bat. I was also going to say some bullpen help but with Williamson close to being back and the idea that Wood will be sent to the bullpen for the rest of the year I would be willing to roll the dice that they can get the job done. I kinda like the idea of Dempster closing and Novoa, who has looked very good lately, Wood and Williamson pitching the 7th 8th and 9th.

It's not like Burnett has been back on the DL since coming off TJ.

No, not on the DL, but he was shut down at the end of last year with inflamation in his elbow and did missed his last 2-3 starts although I believe he was used in relief once. Burnett has pitched over 200 innings once in his career with his next highest like 175.

Well, 2001 was his first full year in the majors, and I don't know why he didn't go over 200 innings. Maybe part of the year was in the minors, maybe not. 2002 he went over 200 innings, and in 2003 he was hurt, 2004 he returned halfway through, and 2005 is only halfway over, so he really hasnt had much of a chance to pass the magical 200 inning barrier.

Isn't having one Kerry Wood on the payroll enough?

Burnett's stats: Career W/L = 44 - 44. In six plus seson he's never won more than 12 games and only once pitched more than 200 innings in a season.

Sounds like Kerry Wood Jr. to me.

you speak of these "stats" as if they matter or something.

They only do if you are considering trading solid prospects for a mediocre, injury prone pitcher that wants $40 million for 4 years starting in 2006.

I think he's pointing to your use of a pitcher's win-loss record to evaluate his effectiveness.
