If it meant getting Burnett? Now that Wood is having problems, and the Orioles seemed disinterested in picking up Lowell, possibly the Cubs could swoop up, and pick up Burnett!?!?

Possibly - Burnett/Lowell for Rusch + Prospects

Possibly - Burnett/Pierre for CPatt/Rusch/Prospects

Would you all be willing to to either of these deals?

Eh, I'd like to pick up burnett. But no no on lowell. Maybe we could add a third team, like the pirates. Didnt they want lowell? or maybe SD.

Lowell is too expensive given his production, and of course, where do you put him?

Pierre is over-rated in my book.

But as far as being a middle-man, I wonder if Florida, Boston and us could work a deal where Burnett and Hollandsworth go to Boston, Trot Nixon comes to the Cubs, and Mitre and Wellemeyer head to Florida.

no, because I don't want Burnett.

I'm completely amazed that the day after Kerry Wood had to leave the game because of arm issues that anyone is still wanting AJ Burnett.

You're surprised that we want a great pitcher the day after one of out big three goes down?

I understand what you mean, burnett gets injured. But....so? Should we dump prior because he's been injured in the past.

Last time I recall, Pittsburgh didn't want him, or they weren't interested.

No to Lowell, no to Pierre, no to Burnett. Encarnacion is having a nice season, wasn't he rumored to be available?

He is. The Cardinals (Or so the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is suggesting/reporting) seems interested in him.

I hope whoever gets Encarnacion's .332 BABIP, realizes they might overpaying for him if slides back to normal numbers or they might get lucky and have him cont. the trend.

he'll probably up that number if he goes to St. Louis . . .

After watching St. Louis this week, I really don't see Rolen making it through the season - he looks terrible at the plate.

I give Rolen credit for playing thru the pain as he has since the incident w/Choi, but there has to come a point when you have to decide is it worth stunting the recovery time while struggling at the plate? I assume his injury would heal quicker (assuming no delayed surgery is req'd) with rest rather than exposing the injury with every swing and throw to 1B. The Cards have the luxury of a huge lead, that should factor into a decision of whether to extend his rest should he can heal quicker for the playoffs.

He does. However, TLR has stated that he needs Rolen defensively. So, take it for whatever it's worth. *shrug*

He's got a high BABIP, but his LD% this year indicates he hasn't been really lucky. Of course I don't know if that's near his career norms of hitting line drives, but it's worth pointing out.

I think all this stuff is self evident, but....

there's a difference between getting rid of someone who has suffered a few fluke injuries, most of them unrelated to pitching, and giving up a bunch of prosepcts to acquire a rental that has suffered arm injury after arm injury. I think you made a similar response when I made this point in another thread, only that time you used Ramirez.

he's a free agent after this year, so that means six years in the big leagues right? I think he has averaged 17 starts per year in his career. he's made more than 27 starts in a year exactly 1 time. saying Burnett gets injured is a total understatement.

when a team is expected to go to the playoffs and fails to do so in large part because its starting staff can't stay healthy, I just don't see the logic in going out and getting a starting pitcher that has had a harder time staying healthy than the guys you already have. I for one just don't think we should keep banging our head against a brickwall thinking that we can break though the wall if we bang our head a little harder.

from the irony department . . .

L. Overbay reached on fielder's choice, R. Weeks scored, L. Overbay to second on third baseman S. Rolen's throwing error

Exactly. Let's pay another $8-$10 Million a year to a pitcher that is hurt all the time (I believe Burnett has never made 30 starts in a year). Not to mention his sub-.500 record for a team that has been pretty good for the most part of his career.

I love Rickie Weeks. It'll be somewhat enjoyable watching him hit bombs off the Cubs for years. He's like a mini-sheffield with his stance.

I live in STL and sports radio talk is that the injury to Rolen isn't necessarily going to get any better with rest. It will feel good when he rests, but as soon as he starts playing again it flares back up. It almost sounds like if he can get thru the season he'll need surgery after.

Watching him play it's obvious he isn't the same player he was.

I know a lot of Cardinals fans are scared that he'll never be a dominant 3rd baseman like he was.... and they're stuck with him for 5 more years.

Burnett is a perfect solution: He is healthy half of a season and Wood is healthy the other half of a season.
