This must be wrong. The Cardinals don't get injuries.

Losing Molina's sub-700 OPS is going to be devastating. :)

And Einar Diaz is a more than competant defensive catcher. This doesn't hurt the Cards much at all.

A relatively minor injury. Let us know when Carp, Morris, Mulder or Pujols goes down. :P

You're right. The Cards are a good enough team to lose 3 or 4 guys for a while and still win the division.

Guys like Molina. Lose Carp, Morris and Pujols and watch what happens to that record.

OT, but about Diaz. A year or two ago, our high school team went to an indoor facility to hit and field, and Diaz showed up since he still was in the Cleveland area from his time on the Indians(he was on the Rangers at the time). He was taking short toss from about 25 feet, and EVERY ball he hit went on a line to the upper left hand corner of the cage. It was amazing, and Diaz is a really bad major league hitter too. Makes you realize how good these guys really are.

How bout guys like Rolen, Sanders, a shaky Edmonds and Walker, and Molina (one of the best defensive catchers in the NL)?

Molina just isn't a significant loss. Walker being injured is to be expected, and Edmonds hasn't really missed any time. He may play hurt, but not very hurt. Ramirez has played hurt for us for the better part of the last 2 seasons. Sanders kind of hurts, And Rolen being hurt might make up for him playing way above himself last year.

As for the Cubs, injuries have hurt a bit this year, but nothing like last year. The 2004 Cubs were good enough to lose 3-4 guys and win the division too, but just not the guys they did lose. In my 20 years of following baseball, I can't remember a team more screwed by injuries as the 2004 Cubs, or a team that seemed as blessed as the 2004 Cards.

The bottom line is we're facing you guys this weekend shorthanded. And we haven't been "blessed" this year. We've had injuries and we're still in the same spot we were in this time last year. If you're going to comment on Walker being injured should be expected, the same holds true for your pitchers. Sanders is definitely a loss, our second best power producer this year. And although you discount Molina, you probably wouldn't rather face us all three games with Blanco. The Cubs/Cards schedule this year worked to your definite advantage unlike last year.

As for the Blanco comment: Barrett is twice the hitter that Yadier is, but Blanco is top notch (nearly as good as Molina) defensively. I can't say it would bother me too much to see Blanco play, and he will for at least one game. And prior to last year, Kerry hadn't missed significant time in years. 2 of Priors DL stints have been due to freak accidents, not being injury prone. Essentially, Prior has had one injury that wasn't line drive or collision related. Either incident would have put anyone on the DL.

Larry Walker has been in the league for 16 years and has played at least 150 games once. Once. 140 games 4 times. The man is a human injury, and now he's old to boot. He may be the most injury prone man in MLB outside of J.D. Drew. You can plan on Walker being injured with a far greater degree of certainty than anyone on the Cubs roster.

Lose Carp..., and watch what happens to that record.

I remember one time, I went fishing, and had a carp on the line, but I lost it.

That made me happy because I didn't lose my tackle. :D 8)

I give props to the Cards because they're in first place. Yeah, you've got some ouchies, but you've only had a couple of injuries -- I'm talking about guys missing more than a month. Anyway, I wonder how far ahead, or if the Cardinals wouldn't even be ahead if Rolen, Molina and Sanders had started the season hurt and on the DL. A lot of the injury excuse has to do with the timing of them. I think the Cards might have won the World Series with a healthy Carpenter. Timing is important, too.

Carpenter still hasn't shown he can stay healthy during the duration of a season. No Carp in the WS hurt the Cards big time LY.

Totally agree. The timing of injuries is huge. The Cubs have been frontloaded 2 years in a row with injuries that have forced them into slow starts. The Cards were very healthy for 5 months last year, and that momentum carried them to the Series were they got killed.

I think what you're seeing now is the Cards playing through some injuries, but they will need to be healthy in the playoffs to make a serious run.

The Cubs are pretty much healed up with the exception of Nomar. I hope all this makes for a great series this weekend.

Ooooohhh yes, I hope so.

I am very excited to see if the improved Cub lineup can only hit crappy pitching (Reds, Pirates), or if they can actually beat a good team.

This will be a good 'measuring stick' for the revamped lineup.

IMO, the Cubs probably win one. If they can take two, I might raise an eyebrow.

Will you shave one off if they sweep?

Heh, that's nothin'. . . down on the big dirty river here in Central IL, we're infested with Asian Carp. They literally jump out of the water and into your boat, or, if you're particularly lucky, smack you in the face.

Seriously, it's crazy. Local 'necks enjoy bowfishing for the things. And while the fish can't throw a curveball as well as that other "Carp", they do taste better when deep-fried - allegedly.

No...., no shaving, but I would raise both of them..., just like Dan Plesac's wierd eyebrows.

If the Cubs sweep, I'll raise you your raised eyebrows for a body painted Cubs logo streaking incident.

But how could you live with yourself afterwords? The shame, the shame. You'd have to take a 2 hour shower just to feel clean afterwords.

You gotta go to the east side for that. Busch is a family place.
