I really, really am in love with Pawelek. I look forward to his boxes as much as I look forward to Harvey's.

Wellemeyer had a very nice start in his last outing. I'm looking for him to put up another strong start tonight. If he does, he could be a strong trade chip for the upcoming deadline yet. I could see some teams more interested in Welly than Mitre, for instance. I'd also like to see Welly more consistent, for if he's not traded, I think he could help the Cubs this stretch run out of the pen. Go Todd!

In the sixth, Peoria tied at 5. EPatt with two homeruns and all five RBI's.

Thanks for the update. Go EPATT!

He really needs a promotion. Daytona could use him as well getting on base with Walker before Moore, Dopirak, and Collins.

Has Ryu's velocity picked up at all yet?

Apparently not, his FB is still in the upper 80s. He appears to be learning how to pitch with less velocity though, a la Brownlie last year at AA (hopefully he'll have better results at AAA).

What a day for Eric!

From the Chiefs website:

Trailing 1-0 after the first half inning, the Chiefs came right back in the bottom of the 1st against Kernels starter Karl Gelinas. Sam Fuld led off the attack with a single up the middle and scored on a long homer off the batters eye in centerfield from Eric Patterson.

 WHOA! That must have been a BLAST! I've never seen a HR to straight-away CF at O'Brien Field (small sample size).

Chiefs site has it listed as 400 ft to dead CF, and Nathan mentions in his Q&A above:

The ball can jump to left down the line (into the palm trees) but it takes a monster shot to get the ball out to CF, RCF or RF. And as Sam Fuld will tell you, balls just die to CF and RCF allowing a good defensive centerfielder to track down almost everything.

Sounds like his other homerun was hit to the picnic plaza in RF. And: "He was robbed of a double by a leaping third baseman in his second at-bat."

Obviously, we need a Peoria Chiefs street-sweeper. :)

Mesa lost 5-0 and Mark Pawelek gave up his first professional ER. :(

Pawelek went 4 IP, gave up 1 ER on 2 H, struck out 3 and walked one. The run scored in Mark's last inning, via an IF single to SS, a ground single to CF (runner advances to third) and run-scoring DP.

Also, LHP Donald Veal (second round pick) made his professional debut. He pitched a scoreless 5th, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out one. Amusingly enough, MILB.com has Veal listed as an IF.

Hey, but the some scouts said he has very little power. Since the scouts said it, it must be true, right?

Some notes from the Gary Hughes interview on the WGN Radio Cubs pregame show:

-Raved briefly about Marshall and Rich Hill as the top lefties to watch. He only briefly mentioned Marshall being placed on the DL but didn't seem terribly concerned about it. Thought that it was important for Hill to get a taste of the majors and thinks he'll be up to stay very soon. He didn't say whether that would be in the bullpen or not.

-Said Nolasco has four pitches that he commands really well. They've pushed him too far every year but he adjusts. Thinks he's a guy who could be ready "really soon."

-Just saw the Daytona team and thinks Dope is having much better ABs right now.

-Noted Moore's and Collins' power.

-Talked about Pie's injury but didn't give any updates on how he's doing or if they would have called him up.

I still have dreams of a lineup starring Patterson, Patterson, and Pie.

Gotta love that 0-3 with a 0.56 ERA. Yeah, w/l record matters a lot.

Did he say when he might be back?

Nope.

Corey has grounded out to first, grounded out to second, and was called out on strikes.

Wellemeyer had a great start tonight. 7 IP, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts.

Ryu has given up 1 run over 7 innings on 4 hits, 0 walks, and 2 strikeouts.

Ryu with a great start tonight, as well. 8 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts. His ERA is down to 3.34.

Coats made his 26th error of the season, though (in CF tonight).
