Per WSCR 670.

A proposed trade to the D'Backs fell through, so the Sox DFA'd him to make room for El Duque.

Any interest here?

No team has to give the Sox anything (and probably won't) because they just need to wait 10 days for him to become a free agent. Afterwards, any team can sign him for the league minimum.

I'd seriously consider going after him. It seems to be apparent that once teams get used to his slow stuff that they are able to hammer him. Having not seen him in the NL may be able to help us out down the stretch. After the season, trade him while his value is high. If he's no good, then you just non-tender him. I wouldn't give up a very good prospect for him, but if you were comfortable that a decently regarded player wasn't going to pan out, do the deal.

I agree that he's probably worth a look in the NL but the idea that a team has to give up a prospect to get him is silly unless the team makes a deal with the White Sox before he becomes a FA in 10 days. At this point, teams have to pay the remainder of his contract plus the Sox will ask for something in return. In 10 days, he can be yours at a bargin basement price.

I'm pretty sure in 10 days he gets sent to AAA if he isn't dealt. Obviously you want him as cheap as possible in cash and players.

Shingo has nothing to back up that ridiculously slow changeup. His delivery is funky and kinda cool - but its either the hanging changeup or a slow fastball with absolutely no movement. So guys are just waiting for that fastball and smacking the crap out of it.

I dont think Shingo would succeed in the NL for very long. He may be worth a couple bags of used baseballs, though.

No, if there are no takers, in 10 days he gets to decide if he will accept a minor league assignment or become a free agent and find his own gig (like Joe Borowski).

That's right, I forgot he had a choice. My bad.

would getting Shingo make it any more likely that future japanese players would come to the Cubs.

I know the topic of potential Japanese players has been brought up, but wouldnt it be more tempting if they had someone to talk to and learn from on their team?

definitely

I have a very good friend who's a sox fan - and he said that was the biggest disappointment with Shingo getting DFA'd.....it now hurts their chances of snagging more japanese players.

Probably not. The Cubs would get some additional exposure in the Japanese press, but they're certainly a known commodity over there.

I guess it couldn't hurt, but two out of the last three big name Japanese free agents have signed with teams that didn't have a player from Japan on their roster already, and Iguchi and Shingo didn't know each other at all before they were teammates this year.

However if a team wants to ensure they get him they can give the sox a throw away prospect and the sox can send him over as well as picking up nearly all hes owed but the league minimum. I don't think its a bad idea at all to try to get him, low risk.

AFAIK, Shingo has options, so he doesn't get a choice of becoming a free agent.

Doesn't look like it.

Sun-Times[/url]"]The move made room for the reinstatement of Orlando Hernandez from the disabled list and means the Sox have 10 days to trade Takatsu or put him on waivers. They have every intention of making a deal, though. If he does clear waivers, he can accept a minor-league assignment or become a free agent.

I don't know exactly how it works with Japanese free agents and options etc.

All the same, he can't possibly have had them or the White Sox would have optioned him instead of DFA'ing him. Unless they were that desperate to get him out of town.
