Seventeen games into his time at West Tenn, Montanez is doing very well:

How does this change his status as a prospect? Could he be playing at Wrigley by mid-season next year?

Possibly if there was a spot for him. However, he'll be 24, like in either AA or AAA...trying to earn his way onto the team. As a corner OF, he's not as valuable offensively as he needs to be. The power needs to continue to go up, which could happen.

I don't think he has the hands for SS. It's one thing to bobble the ball at 2B on a sharp liner and another to do it at SS. You do that at SS and it's an E6, most of the time at 2B it is still an out or a FC with runners on base.

Heck, many of the best defensive OF'ers in MLB history started their careers at SS, Mays, Mantle, etc.

Pie and Bacon are injured, I'd try him at LF to start and see how his range and instincts are for the OF (I assume they are below avg. for a CF'er) and see if he could handle CF, which might be a longshot.

I'd scrap SS for the moment.

I don't get how the Cubs can make such a high pick on a HS SS who has iffy hands. Did they scout him for 1 game? He has no value at any other position than ss or 2B. Complete wasted pick and the scout should be questioned.
