Heading into the deadline can we pull off a 15-3 or 14-4 run? I think if we can do something like this, we can be in the thick of things.

Pit x 4 (4-0)

Cin x 4 (3-1 or 4-0)

Stl x 3 (2-1)

SF x 3 (2-1)

Ari x 4 (3-1)

Wouldn't it be sweet to sit at 58-47 or 57-48 at the deadline?

I hope the Cubbies can pull it off.

Every time one of these threads is created, the team is horrible. I am going to go with 8-10

man - beat me to it. I was thinking the exact same thing. Everytime I see one of these threads, it scars me. Any of these threads should be locked....

When I first read this, I figured there was a typo ... but actually, "scares" and "scars" both work here.

The key is the first two series. If we cant's go 6-2 then I doubt we make any big moves (unless there is future value).

I'm almost afraid we'd have to do even better than that considering the historic difficulty the Cubs have had going to St. Louis.

I don't see us sweeping either of those teams, to be honest.

I think they have the ability, but it is hard to sweep anybody in a 4 game series (generally).

A 4 game sweep against Pittsburgh might be less likely than a simple series victory vs STL. I don't see it happening. If they did pull off even a 14-4 record before the break, meaning they'd be 57-48, they'd be more than just in the thick of things. They'd start to look like possible favorites again, because the only way they do that is if they get something they havne't had all year, and that's consistently solid hitting and pitching.

12-6 would be huge at this point, bringing them back to 5 over .500, 1 below the high water mark for the season. Realistically though I'm not expecting more than 10-8.

I don't think it's even been a question of ability. This team has the ability to hang with anyone. It's just a matter of putting it together on that day, and that's where the Cubs have been horrible.

If the pitching can come around and stay consistent, 12-6/11-7/10-8 would seem about right to me. But we've all jinxed it anyway, so everyone get ready for another 8 game slide...

My prediction

Pit x 4 (3-1)

Cin x 4 (3-1)

Stl x 3 (1-2)

SF x 3 (2-1)

Ari x 4 (2-2)

So 11-7, and I feel like I'm being too optimistic with that.

That would put us at 54-51 and probably 4-5 games out of the Wild Card

for us to go 15-4 or whatever, the stars have to align. wood, prior, and zambrano need to have dominate performances, hopefully giving us major innings to save our shaky bullpen.

derrek lee and aramis ramirez need to have stretches of peak-season performances. lee cant possibly peak more than he has been, but if he can can continue to still drive in a run every game we'll be fine. im not asking .377 BA, but .300 will do. give us 1-3 with an RBI and ill be happy.

those two batting cant do it by themselves though. hairston and walker need to get on-base, burnitz has to give us quality hits, and whoever is playing SS needs to be good enough.

its going to be very tough, everybody has to play to their max ability.

I think it'll be important to start getting some early runs too. It seems like almost every game now we either go 1-2-3 in the first, or we strand 2 or 3 guys in the first. We need to start building up early leads so our pitchers can get comfortable out there.

I say it'll go like this:

PIT: 3-1

CIN: 2-2

STL: 1-2

SF: 2-1

ARZ: 2-2

that's 10-8. Sorry, but that seems about right to me. Puts them 1 game over at the deadline. Ho hum.

Interesting point though: At this point last year, Houston was EXACTLY where we are right now. Will we do what they did? Time to play the games and find out.

True, but Houston also replaced their manager at this time last year... :-k

That is really right on the point. So far on the season, the CUBS have been outscored 42-35 in the first inning, and 47-42 in the second inning. We really need to get "faster out of the gate".
