my thoughts are these:

the cubs have 17 of the next 21 vs losing teams

they need to go 15-6 at worst and preferably 16-5. that would put us 10 games over. if we go 10-8 for the next 18 and are 1 over at the deadline then we are finished for the year. this is where we need a run. i am not saying it will happen but to compete it really has to. we need to play about 20 games over for the second half to have a shot(90 wins) if we play around .500 for the first 20(vs our weakest schedule) how would we be able play 20 games over the last 50?

1-0 so far

And the bullpen is very rested. Lets hope that the rest will help them, hopefully the rust can be kept to a minimum.

Heading into the deadline can we pull off a 15-3 or 14-4 run? I think if we can do something like this, we can be in the thick of things.

Pit x 4 (4-0)

Cin x 4 (3-1 or 4-0)

Stl x 3 (2-1)

SF x 3 (2-1)

Ari x 4 (3-1)

Wouldn't it be sweet to sit at 58-47 or 57-48 at the deadline?

I hope the Cubbies can pull it off.

Looking good so far Knyption. :D

The best part of starting this scenario 2-0 is Kerry Wood's performance today suggests more winning and dominance is to come from him!

Interesting point though: At this point last year, Houston was EXACTLY where we are right now. Will we do what they did? Time to play the games and find out.

We don't even have to go on a tear like they did. Remember they were around the 500 mark in late August. We just need to keep playing solid the rest of the way and things will fall into place.

I say it'll go like this:

PIT: 3-1

CIN: 2-2

STL: 1-2

SF: 2-1

ARZ: 2-2

that's 10-8. Sorry, but that seems about right to me. Puts them 1 game over at the deadline. Ho hum.

Yes, I'm right so far. Let's hope I overestimated the Reds' chances and we take 3 or 4 of those.

Well, we didn't get 4 from Pittsburgh, but 3-1 is deftinaly better than 2-2.

It should have been a sweep. Playoff teams don't lie down like dogs against a rookie pitcher. I don't care who he is.

The Cubs' advance scout needs to be taken outside and shot. The same thing happens every single time they face a guy the first time.

3 Game Sweeps are tough, 4 game sweeps in the ML are nearly impossible. I'd ask Fred to compile some stats on the percntage of times a team actually swept 4 games. I bet even amongst the great teams, they rarely did it. I know the Sox did it this weekend, but i don't remember how many other teams have done it.

You're incredibly unrealistic if you get upset for losing one game out of every 4, even against the pirates.

Yes. 3 game sweeps is tough, but 4 games is close to impossible. I remember me and Serena had a little discussion about that, and she pretty much agreed that getting a 4 game sweep is very difficult.

Again, like I said before, 3-1 is better than 2-2.

I'm upset at the WAY they lost it. There's no excuse for that. None. The fact that it happens just about every time they face a new pitcher points to horsecrap advance scouting.

I see your point. I thought you meant that it was absurd they didn't sweep the Pirates because they are a bad team.

IT could be the scouts, or it could be this team just gets antsy when they don't know someone. It was the only game in the past 7 where they looked super impatient.

The Cubs have 13 days to show if they are for real. They cannot count on Nomar or Williamson to help much. I'm not saying Normar or Scott can't or won't, I'm saying the Cubs shouldn't bank on it.

That means between now and two Sunday's from now Hendry has to make a trade for an impact bat and maybe some bullpen help if he thinks the Cubs have a real shot. Both of those comidities are in short supply. I hope Hendry can pull it off without gutting the farm. At the same time, I don't know that he should even try given this team's terrible play against better than mediocre teams.

Is that really necessary?

I thought we were trying to get away from that kind of stuff with all of the new guests coming onto NSBB.

Fred, if it's not too much to ask, I would like to know how the Cubs, as a team stat, did offensively and pitching during the 9 game stretch.
