BALTIMORE, June 29 - The veteran relievers Paul Quantrill and Mike Stanton appear to have pitched their last games for the Yankees. Hoping to make their bullpen younger, the Yankees could release or trade both on Thursday.

Quantrill and Stanton shook hands and exchanged hugs with teammates and club personnel after Wednesday night's rainout at Camden Yards. Quantrill would not comment after leaving the clubhouse, and Stanton said, "You can read between the lines."

Haven't heard much about Quantrill. Think he'd be an improvement over Remlinger? If so, then I'm all for it. *shrug*

After all, I do think we do need at least 1 more veteran in the pen and to cut lose with Remlinger.

Um, no thanks on either one, if I must have a veteran in the bullpen (and I do not believe I do), I'd stick with Remlinger first. What's to like about these two? Both appear washed up:

Quantill is 36 yo, has a 6.75 ERA, 1.72 WHIP, and BAA of .361. Yikes. Hardly an anomaly either; last year, he posted a lousy 4.72/1.51/.316 for the same three numbers. See ya.

Mike Stanton is 38 yo, his line so far this year is 7.07/1.64/.298. Wow. As a pure LOOGY, it isn't nearly so bad: 0.93 WHIP, .176 BAA. However, the sample size is very small here, he has just 14 IP on the season. Was he hurt and missed some time? Don't know.

Here is one thing to consider I guess. We know how Dustbag misuses Remlinger. It's darn near criminal. Would you swap Remlinger for Stanton and a minor leaguer? Stanton could be a pure LOOGY like we need, and the Cubs would save some money (I think Stanton makes $1.5MM, though I could be wrong; Remlinger makes $4MM). But Quantrill, definitely no interest.

wait for him to be cut then sign him to a minor league deal.

I'm not even sure Stanton is a "pure LOOGY"

His 3 year splits:

righties - .231/.294/.352/.646

lefties - .255/.331/.364/.695

Granted, those are pretty close but they don't show that he can get lefties any better than righties.

You might be right. My reaction was purely based on another team's crap being better than our team's crap. Quantrill was pretty damn good through 2001-2003, that was all I needed to know.

It never occured to me that Remlinger has pretty awesome peripheal stats (20.7 IP, .235 BAA, 1.11 WHIP, 19/4 K/BB), even despite Dusty's (mis)handling of the bullpen.

Still, I would trade away our 39 year old Remmy for either of those two, as it is apparent that Dusty will never use Remlinger in a way that will get the most benefit.

I would take a stab at one of these guys if I was the Cubs , let Mitre go back to Iowa and start every day, The Cubs have good luck at picking arms off the scrap heap and getting decent years out of them Van Poppel, Worrell, Jobo, Rusch.

Paul Quantrill as a Yankee...

Guy's done. I call that the "when low strikeout rates have their revenge" effect, with a bit of "I like to throw it over the middle of the plate" thrown in.

That excuse would wash a bit more if it wasn't for the fact that Quantrill have been just as useless this year as he was at the end of the last year, despite the five month winter break.

Is he still throwing 5-7 mph slower than early last season?
