They’re number 1 in OPS+ yet not even top 5 wRC+. Fangraphs and baseball reference have conflicting data.

That makes it good for people who like to argue about if a player is good or not. Find the stat you like and use it for your argument😬

It isn't necessarily "conflicting", to be fair. It's that wRC+ is designed specifically to fix the flaws in OPS+.

His critics complain he isn’t worth his contract. But whether it is because he is a great defender and average hitter, that gets him his value, he does play to what he is being paid. If you believe in WAR as an indicator of how good a player is, it shouldn’t matter if he does it hitting, base  running or fielding. A ++ defender with an average bat is more valuable than a negative defender with a better than average bat.  But his critics only want to talk offense.

I'll take an average defender with an above average bat for $27 million per year anyday.

"You know if you set aside the things he's good at he's pretty bad actually"

Actually, he is a great defensive SS with an average bat making superstar money.

Is you wanted an elite bat with average defense you’d end up with Trea Turner for $300 million for 11 years. Swanson’s making nowhere near superstar money relative to the market. He was the fourth highest paid middle infielder from his free agent class by $250 million combined.
