Great--so we'll see him again in Spring Training next year. He should just buy a house in Arizona now. :?

According to Oneiri Fleita and Ron Potesta (as mentioned in today's minor league thread), Angel Guzman is throwing very well out in Mesa and the goal is for him to get to the AFL. Angel will probably get some pitching time somewhere in the system late this summer.

And he'll be good in spring training getting our hopes up only to get injured again at the beginning of next year. It's a broken record. :x

Boy, Angel is going to give Kerry a run for his money in the oft-injured phenom olympics.

I wish he'd get healthy enough for us to trade him. He's basically been ML ready since 2003, but he keeps getting hurt.

Same old song and dance for Angel.

Cubs.com

Pitcher Angel Guzman most likely will not pitch in a game this year because of inflammation in his right elbow. Guzman had been slowed by a strained right forearm, but during a side session, he began to feel pain in his elbow. The Cubs have decided to shut him down

Of course...

Hopefully Pie can get back in there sometime during the first week of August, at least.

What a big surprise there. Angel might as well go sell cars. He' never going to be healthy enough to pitch in the big leagues.

As long as he keeps getting injured? I don't get that question.

So the Cubs can keep him as long as they want, without another team being able to claim him or sign him? #-o

*sigh* And it looked so promising. Here was Raisin's response to the e-mail he sent to Ron this past Wednesday when Oneri was there:

Angel is throwing in Mesa and throwing very well ("back to his normal self"). The main goal is for Angel to throw in the AFL, but he should get some action somewhere this summer too (Ron: "hopefully for our team").

It's funny that we want to trade prospects in retrospect when they tank, but cry about the ones that got away (Willis) and are unwilling to move the top prospects with the most value (Pie). We don't have a crystal ball that tells us if a player is going to be and injury prone bust with tons of talent.

Guzman is frustrating though, i'll give you that. he's still young though. it's not quite do or die time.

How much longer do the Cubs have to hide him in the minors?

After this season, he'll have one more option year remaining.

He was added to the 40-man roster after the 2003 season, so 2004 and 2005 have been option years burned.

Coming out of spring training 2007, he'll have to be kept on the 25-man roster (or the major league DL) or be passed through waivers if you want to send him back to the minors.

And now Cubs.com's story has changed.... from the Wood/Nomar back soon notes

Angel Guzman, a highly touted right-handed pitcher who has been slowed by injuries, is rehabbing in Mesa, Ariz., and is scheduled to pitch on Aug. 15 with the rookie team. If all goes well, Guzman could be assigned to an Arizona Fall League team. The Cubs would like him to go every fifth day for two months to get ready for 2006.

"We thought we'd bring him along gradually," said Oneri Fleita, the Cubs player development director.

Guzman was slowed this season with a strained right forearm and developed inflammation in his right elbow.

It also says tha Pie will need about 8 more days.

Good news about Guzman. Let's just keep our fingers crossed (or continue to keep them crossed since first doing so over 2 years ago...).

If Pie is back in 8 days, he'll have missed over 7 weeks.

My post about 3 up, instead of being shut down he's going to pitch in the rookie league starting Aug 15, and may make it to Mesa and pitch every 5th day to get ready for '06.
