The Cubs announced Wednesday that they’ve signed infielder Nicky Lopez to a big league deal. Infielder and Rule 5 pick Gage Workman was designated for assignment to open a spot on the roster. Photographer Sam Bernero first spotted Lopez heading into Wrigley Field this afternoon and tweeted out a photo she snapped. Shane Riordan of 670 The Score subsequently reported that Lopez, an Octagon client, was signing a major league deal.

Chicago also selected the contract of recently acquired lefty Drew Pomeranz, optioned righty Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A Iowa and transferred lefty Justin Steele from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL (thus opening a 40-man spot for Pomeranz).

I really wanted Workman to work out and am still hoping a minor deal can be made to keep him in the system. But so it goes.

Not sure I get the Nicky Lopez love. We already have Berti and Brujan. If it's about 3B or another infielder I'd rather give Triantos a go.

Triantos would require a 40 man spot that they probably want to keep as fungible as possible for flexibility.  Lopez is a guy you just don't care if you have to drop him but once Triantos is added he's on the 40 man permanently if you have any designs on him being an MLB contributor.

Doesn't make sense to keep rookies rotting  on the bench, especially good ones.  At least Lopez has a real chance to have a WAR above zero and can provide defense when needed.

I'd like to see Workman kept and sent down.

Triantos is a far worse fielder than Workman, and he's off to a terrible start hitting

If last year's reports are accurate, he's apparently at least an average defender now.

You barely need a 4th bench guy in today's game.  Especially on this roster where Nico is the backup shortstop.

I made this point at some time over the offseason, but Luis Vazquez spent 47 on the roster last year.  More than a quarter of the season. and he only got 14 at bats.

Get Berti in as much as possible.  I like the guy's motor on the bases and his potential for stolen bases.

I'm interested in the Lopez experiment.  He can't do much worse than Workman at 3rd.

I mean, they all suck. Thankfully the rest of the offense is amazing and we're getting just enough pitching to win games against tough teams. Try to find a hot hand while Shaw (hopefully) gets right, but just slot whoever plays 3B at the bottom of the order and live with it for the time being.
