Imagine how much every owner hates Cohen right now LOL

Not Tom.  Cohen giving Soto huge money gives Tom more cover to hide behind and justify why the Cubs were never even involved in the conversation.

Hey this does not hurt for Bellinger and the Yankees.

Yeah I can't wait for the team's mediocre offense to trade a bat they badly need and hope they can fill the gap with dwindling number of options left in FA.

Anything can happen, but it's hard to imagine Soto being able to beat a $51M AAV from age 31-40.  But I guess the escalator clause gives the Mets a LITTLE bit of security that they control their own destiny to keep Soto for the rest of his career if they choose to do so.

Or they can do the same thing as the Yankees and call his bluff. The Yankees could have added another year to void Coles opt out and they were like... Nah. So Cole decided to opt back in.

I wasn’t judging the decision, more that if it has already been made, this event provides the Cubs a bit more leverage with the Yankees specifically.

In the world today, where a team can now pay just short side of a billion dollars for a player (and other teams were willing to  offer in the same $ neighborhood) cubfans have to believe cubs will be in desperation mode to alieve themselves of belli $ so they don't exceed 240mil entire team threshold while continually signing the injury impaired bounceback candidates rather elite tier players

Maybe?

But if the Mets can afford this kind of contract, surely the Cubs could have afforded literally any other contract.

So if we compare Ohtani and Soto's deal,  even if we assume as players that they're of equal ability (which they aren't) the Mets just paid 300m for years 26, 27, and 28 for Soto.  100m AAV.  Seems pretty dumb to me.

Counterpoint: Steve Cohen is rich as horsefeathers and 300M over 3 years is nothing to him and that's pretty cool for Mets fans and the Soto family's next 5 generations.
