Also, the fact that Beane wanted Cruz leads me to believe he's probably not too bad.

further evidence that this forum needs a puke emoticon.

Agreed on the want to puke.

I take it I hit an anti-Beane nerve with you? My point was that Oakland could have received any number of deals for Hudson, but settled on a deal that included Cruz -- so he must have some apparent value.

Where exactly is the need to vomit in that?

the need to vomit stems from the hate of anything new.

Actually, I think it's from the "Beane did it, so it must be the right decision" school of thought that causes the urge to :puker:

Nope, everything's some form of revolution with Sully.

maybe it's "Beane did it, so I desperately want it to fail or I'll rip my face off, gouge my eyes out and vomit on my baseball card collection because I've spent my life believing that sacrifice bunting is the be-all-end-all of team success and if I have to believe anything different I'll cease to exist" that causes it.

I woder if we can ever get past our old ideas about Cruz. I thought he'd be really good/ #1 starter type good. Yet he's now on his 3rd team that hasn't wanted him in the starting rotation. Something doesn't add up.

That stat about Cruz working pretty much only in mop up duty really shined a new light on his suceess last year.

I'll say this about Cruz - he's damn ugly.

Cruz for Pratt/Lewis looking better and better....

Have you seen what Lewis is doing at Iowa so far? I still believe he's not going to make it.

(Kramer impression) Oh...I've been seeing.

You may have the opinion he won't make it, but it's still WAY early. Not even out of April yet. I expect a certain period of adjustment whenever a player switches levels. If Lewis hasn't turned it around by July, then I'll worry.

He's a very good defender, just needs to hit to be a starter in the bigs. Last year was a dream season for him, but how rare is a true (non drug-aided) fluke season? I still say 2 years of Walker (or maybe now 1 year of Walker, 1 year of Hairston) and Lewis to start in 2007.

He switched levels at the 3/4 point of last year. He's got over 150 AB's at AAA now. If he's going to adjust, he should do it soon. The kid isn't so young anymore.

Once again Sulley's amazing online psychological skills fail miserably.

When in doubt argue against Strawman Morgan. Much easier than defending the statement that "he must be pretty good if Billy Beane acquired him!"

People were saying that Cruz must not be very good because the John Schuerholz, a successful gm, elected to trade him. It seems like a natural response to say then that he must be pretty good because Billy Beane, a successful gm, elected to trade for him.

I guess I didn't see that angle of it. I stand corrected if that's his line of thinking.

I insulted you personally by saying you don't know how I think? Or was it my response to your always condescending tone regarding Beane.

Beane didn't write Moneyball. It is about his philosophy, but he didn't write it. Michael Lewis wrote it.

Treebeard knows that. He's poking fun at the people who think Beane wrote it or who characterize Beane as being an egomaniac because of the book.

I might consider taking Juan Cruz off that list if I were you - I thought he would be a good one as well, and especially when he went to the Braves, but they let him go as well and he is NOT doing well at all with Oakland.

Atlanta let him go despite the fact he pitched very well for them last year. In fact, he was better than any reliever on the 2004 Cubs, save Hawkins.

And I really hope you aren't writing him off because of his first four innings of 2005.

I loved Cruz and was pretty disappointed that the Cubs traded him. but looking at his stats from last year is pretty deceptive IMO. he had 50 appearances and a grand total of 2 holds and 13 inherited runners. he was used strictly in mop up duty

Those numbers have nothing to do with how well he pitched, though. Cruz's ERA was excellent last season, though I'll grant you that he didn't quite pitch up to that 2.75 mark. His FIPS ERA was 3.70, not as good but not too shabby, either. He still struck out a ton of batters, though he still needs to work on his control.

You have a reason to be skeptical, but I have reason for optimism too. Soon is the key word there. He started poorly in AAA last year but was starting to heat up...then he broke his leg. It's only mid-April, give him at least a month.

I don't really have a dog in this fight as I'd prefer the topic return to the fantastic, underappreciated Andy Sisco.

However, I think its disengenuous to pretend someone wouldn't be insulted by the bolded portion.

He was nearly in line for the win, but KC wasted a bases loaded 1 out opportunity in the bottom of 6. Now he's gone.

Sisco pitched 2/3 of an inning today with 1 BB. While we were worried that the Royals might be able to hide him in the back of their bullpen, he has now become one of their primary relievers. :( Come back Andy!

Andy won't be back. He has shown enough to be stashed for the remainder of the required 90 days, then DLed if he starts to suck. (I got that right, Tim, 90 days?) Despite the posters who continue to contend he is not technically gone yet, I think its pretty much a given at this point.
