I think the Cubs may have known Thompson wasn’t available yesterday and probably wanted Lopez to take the spot. But he couldn’t get to SF before the game. My understanding was Nittoli was close enough to SF that he could be at the game in time. It could have been he was a healthy arm for emergency. They may like him too and hope he accepts a minor league demotion. But for the sake of the game yesterday he was on the ML roster. Who really knows. But it is very odd to pick him up when the very next day you are going to let him go and bring Lopez in. Just thinking maybe availability for yesterdays came into play.

Nittoli was clearly just a warm body who was physically in the area and this has been planned since Wednesday night

Curious to see how Roberts does.  He didn't seem quite ready but here we are.
