Ohtani is a special case.  He creates revenue streams that Soto does not.

He also provides value that's nearly unheard of in baseball when he's able to pitch on top of his MVP level bat.

Juan Soto isn't a special case? The guy will be a 26 year old UFA and already an all time great hitter. Is he Ohtani? No. Will het get the same money? No. Should the Cubs be willing to fork out the money for a Soto? Absofuckinglutely.

As a marketing phenomenon, Soto isn't in the same ballpark, no.   Ohtani's existence has grown the game globally.  His jersey is already the greatest selling of all time.   He could play one season at Wrigley and that merch would sell forever.  The ROI for signing him dwarfs any other player on the planet.

They only make additional money off the jersey's sold at Wrigley.

The extra marketing money goes to ohtani and mlb, not the individual team.

That's not true of all the advertising he'd bring into Wrigley, right?

I think Ohtani is unique in that he'd have noticeably moved the needle on Marquee subscriptions sold, plus might be enough to get distribution of the network in Japan.  Regular players yeah they don't impact revenue much because merch and a lot of that other stuff goes into a league pot.
