He was ready that is for sure.

Maybe he's the closer for the end of this year and then next year he's a starter? Has that ever happened?

First person that jumped to mind regarding this was Chris Sale.  I don't know that he was "The Closer", per se, but he was definitely the 8th inning guy and then was closing some games by years end. Don't remember if that was due to injury, performance, etc.

Possible too that they move Wick or Assad to help the pen with Horton taking a rotation spot.. Brown can also go to the pen when Steele returns.

Steele, Imanaga, Taillon, Horton,  Wick/Assad

I just dont think Hendricks will be back in the rotation

Wicks and Assad both have top-35 FIP's in baseball right now. There's little reason either should be moved from the rotation.

I think it's more likely we see a hybrid 6-man to maintain Horton and Imanaga's innings a bit.

I would guess in season that if any SP goes out that another SP comes in.  For example if the Padres continue to slide trading for the remaining 1.5 seasons of Dylan Cease.  We saw how quickly depth can erode and you are forced to throw your #8 starter out there.  Especially with Horton and Brown having pretty low inning caps this season, no way Jed goes net negative on SPs until at least the winter.

We're only talking Hendricks, they could just as easily keep him on the IL til if that situation comes up.

They have now between active,  Iowa, and on IL..

Steele, Imanaga,  Taillon, Assad, Wicks

Smyly,  Brown, Wesneski,  and now Horton

Can even add Straily if it really becomes disastrous...

I think theyre covered for a just in case disaster til June/July if they decide to try and make a trade for an available veteran arm that can help them get to and in the postseason.

I mean, Hendricks would really need to look sharp in rehab assignments and in a game or two at Iowa to be considered to get back in rotation and risk struggling to go 4-5 innings still, especially when there's young arms that can do that or better.

Wicks and Assad should only get better with more starts/innings under their belt.
