Glasnow took half of that though. I believe Snell is looking for like 7/210. He just won a CY.

Didn’t Glasnow sign a contract that is giving him around $26M to $27M  a year. $135M total. Snell could want 7/$210, doesn’t mean he gets it. But he can make a case for a similar salary as Glasnow.
I think Montgomery and Imanaga will also be in the  $22M-$25M annual range as well. And all around 5 or 6 years.
Which is why I don’t think any of them will be on the Cubs.

Boxberger and Fulmer at about $7 million between the two wasn’t “nearly zero investment.”  They were bad/hurt, and performed significantly below their career numbers, but the investment was there and had they posted their expected 60-65 innings of 3-3,50 ERA baseball, the bullpen would have been a different story.

For whatever reason the Cubs weren’t able to repeat the recent success they’d had with Givens, Robertson, Chafin, etc.

I'm not sure I'd call 1/100th of a Shotei an investment.  It sure sounds like bargain shopping to me.  They got 2 pitchers for the same amount they spent on Mancini

30m AAV for Snell is a bit much for a 4 WAR player.  He won the Cy Young but isn't exactly a workhorse every year and looks like he got lucky last year quite a bit given the xFIP.

Especially for 7 years. I can see something like $156/6 years or $135/5. I wouldn’t want the Cubs to do that, but I think someone will.

I will admit I drank the Cub off season Kool aid Jed and the media served up. I know better than that as I've been there and done that before, a lot, like many of us. We all heard Cubs will spend...finalist for Ohtani....in on Soto...Cubs will be active at GM meetings. My hopes and expectations were through the roof and yes, they were unrealistic. It was fun to ride the rollercoaster of Ohtani and Soto with you NSBB.  Want to wish you all happy holidays!

It's been fun, oh yes.

Is that the Catcher Whisperer?

Nope. At least not the one from Milwaukee. Strittmatter is currently in Colorado with the Rockies. It was announced earlier on that no one from Milwaukee was coming over with Counsell. Hopefully it's more Counsell's eye for talent and not just luck for why he was surrounded by good coaching.

That's what I'm wondering.  Regarding Counsell, a lot of ink has been spilled about Brewers devil magic and what the implications are for the bullpen.  One thing we have not probably talked about enough is Brewers devil magic and what that potentially means for Miguel Amaya.  The bat already looks above average for a catcher, if he can take the sort of defensive leap that Omar Narvaez and William Contreras took their first years with the Brewers he's probably an impact player.

Which really wouldn't be shocking. The book on Amaya was always "glove over bat" profile. While he graded out pretty average last year defensively, he basically hadn't caught since the summer of 2021. It wouldn't be very surprising to see him take a jump forward regardless of any devil magic. Add in Counsell's history with the devil magic and there's probably even a better chance Amaya goes from average to even above average with the glove.

Yeah I'm actually probably most worried about the arm.  He apparently had great arm strength in the minors, so did his TJ temporarily reduce it or permanently reduce it.

I'm hoping it's temporary. Figure, he's just hitting the 1.5 year mark from TJS right now and pitchers tend to take around that long to really build back up. It's probably different for a position player than a pitcher, but maybe it's not so different for a catcher.

Framber Valdez anybody?

Sounds like he could be available?

What would a Cub package look like?

Valdez /

PCA. Wicks. Brown. Triantos. Canaro

I think that's an overpay bro

He's a true ace. We need an ace.

Houston needs to build up their minors.

He's decent price for 2 more seasons. I'd be willing to let these kids go and not blink

It’s a huge overpay. PCA has more trade value on his own.

Reports we are competing against Boston and Baltimore. Baltimore has the kids much like the cubs.

If you had an ace on your team to trade,  would you honestly settle for PCA alone?

I don’t know what Houston would take. But the Cubs should not give up anywhere near that amount. And where are you reading that Valdez is available and the Cubs are competing with Baltimore and Boston? Not doubting you, just didn’t see that.

This is year 3 of Jed being incompetent in the offseason while getting defended aggressively by people who somehow think he's a secret genius

This is Jed's 4th off season.  Theo left in Nov of 2020.

Not sure if this has been posted but just read a tidbit on MLB Trade Rumors that the Cubs were reportedly in on Jung Hoo Lee.  Makes a Bellinger signing more likely since they'd likely be in on him too:

They were only in on Lee because he's much cheaper.  He's a bargain, and Belli is not.  If they can get Belli for 6/113 it would have been done.  It's only about the money.
