This one will take most of the winter to resolve, but it's going to be a good one. I've put together a page that lists the major free agents and puts a drop down list next to each name. The contest is to name as many destinations as possible. Each correct answer will be weighted by the player's VORP (Value Over Replacement Player) so that ties will be extremely unlikely. It also makes certain that someone that correctly names where Beltre ends up gets more credit than someone that picks where Derek Lowe ends up.

Right now, I don't have the form tied to the database yet. I'm looking for feedback on whether I've got the right names out there. If there's someone that you feel should be there and isn't, let me know. Likewise, if there's someone on the list that shouldn't be let me know that.

I'll tie everything into the database tomorrow night and entries will be taken through Sunday night. I'll announce the prize at that time. I'll also put together a page that will show "Current Standings" so that we can all check progress as the offseason progresses. I'll also make it possible to retrieve your entry as the offseason goes so you don't have to write down everything you entered.

Here's the contest entry form as it stands tonight...

How do you submit your entry?

Check in the morning and it will have a submit button.

These are some cool contest ideas you have Tim.

Keep 'em coming!

Maybe we can have a whole set of these during the year, like "1st time Dusty uses Remlinger incorrectly" or "Guess the line for the unknown AAAA pitcher facing the Cubs"

Another option for players would be retirement/play overseas. Is there a possibility of those options? I mean, for Clemens, without the option of retirement, it seems obvious where his destination would be.

Maybe an option of "no MLB contract" would cover retirement, Japan, and minor league contracts and the guy who just gets no offers.

From the instructions at the top of the contest page:

If you feel a player will retire or play in a league other than MLB in 2005, leave the entry reading "---" to score points for that player.

In other words, people should READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and they might find their questions answered. (Sorry; I couldn't resist, since I'm a college professor and still sometimes have to beat students over the head (figuratively speaking, not literally) to get them to read instructions. :D )

What happens if you submit your entry while not a premium member but then become one? Can you submit twice and be eligible for both prizes?

No, you can't submit twice (well, you can, but only your first entry will count). If you join Premium by the end of this month, then your entry will count for the $100 cash prize. If you don't join or join after 11/30 you'll be entered for the three months of Premium prize.

16 Entries so far. It's worth filling out the form just to see what everyone is guessing for the destinations!

JD Drew and Glendon Rusch are tied for the most unanimous destinations, with 15 out of the 16 guesses being the same. At the other end of the spectrum, there are thirteen different teams chosen as the destination for Kevin Millwood in sixteen tries!

Entry is free and fun. Put yourself on record so that you can come back and brag later when you get things right. :D
