The Blackhawks reportedly signed Corey Perry to a 1/$4m contract. He’s coming off three straight years making $1m or less. What was the point of trading a pick for his rights if all you were going to do was grossly overpay him?

the cap floor was never a real issue. these silly contracts took care of it

I'm sure the overpay is to get him to sign with a team that has no concerns telling people they don't intend to compete this year (or next).  Not saying that makes the signing justified but I'm sure that's why.

Davidson said yesterday that their offseason is pretty much done in terms of building next year's roster.

Yeah, it’s gotta be pretty much done. I think it’ll be interesting to see how Davidson transitions from acquiring draft picks, which he’s been pretty good at, to acquiring actual players in the future. Everybody expects this team to finish at the bottom next season, but by 24/25 you have to be showing some improvement, even if you aren’t a real competitive threat.

it seems to me that Davidson played a little fast and loose with his 4 2nd round picks. He probably reached for that one goalie and traded one for a 2nd next year that could easily be further back in the draft. That’s not maximizing the value. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. They are set up with a bunch of picks the next three drafts, they can afford to reach and take big swings. But you really have to hit on quite a few of these guys to make this work.

I agree with the other second round picks, but the goalie had been getting quite a bit of hype leading into the draft.

Yes, and he was mocked to the hawks with their 3rd/4th picks in round two, and nobody that I saw had him going that early, or as the first goalie taken. It’s not a crazy reach or anything but it was probably not a selection they would have made if they didn’t have 3 more picks that round.

again, I dont hate it, but Davidson does seem to be a guy that will not seek to maximize value. Hes got a type, and they really went hard after that specific type of player. I think they’ll need to learn to branch out very soon. You can’t be all 5’11 skating phenoms.

Yeah I can't stand when GMs have a type.  It's fine to have certain attributes you value more than others but I've seen stubborn GMs fail due to obsession with a type.  AKME is having that same issue for the Bulls with tall athletic players who can't shoot for horsefeathers.

The future reacquisition idea that was never all that likely to happen, won’t happen.  Debrincat traded to and signed extension with Detroit.

Thanks, I hate it.  What next, Toews to the Blues? (oh no please tell me I didn't speak it into existence)

Yea but gooney said tanking never works

What? No I didn’t. I said it sucks and I hope it blows up in the face of every team that tries it. Blackhawks still haven’t accomplished anything on the ice. Also, not sure how preseason gambling odds on an individual award means anything. They are going to suck again next year.

i'm personally looking forward to a stress free year where we know they're going to suck.  just sit back and watch this little kid score a bunch of goals and dream

Yeah, you’ve always been consistent that whether it works or not tanking sucks, which I totally get. It’s also probably not as great of a way to build a contender as people think it is. The Cubs may have won due to tanking, the Hawks might have gotten a generational talent doing it, but many more teams have pissed away 5+ years tanking and have nothing to show for it. What did the Bulls get for pissing away a half decade? LaVine and 1 playoff win basically.  Their tank netted just 1 pick inside the top 6, and that was in a really shallow draft. The Sox got 2 playoff wins for their long tank and are looking to sell off now.  It’s a lot of misery for a small chance at payoff.

top 50 NHL prospects. Blackhawks lead with 5.
1. Bedard

17. Moore

22. Korchinski

29. Reichel

50. Nazar

Reichel is a bit of a reach, as he’s lost rookie eligibility (but fits the writers’ specific rules and is only 21). and Nazar barely made the list, which would have tied them with Columbus with 4. At least two of these guys won’t qualify as prospects by the time they redo the list midseason and Korchinski hopefully won’t be eligible next year. But they also have guys that could enter that list by next summer, and will have multiple early draft picks to add back on.

Who were the four for Columbus? I don’t subscribe.

I assume Fantilli, Sillinger, Johnson and….Blankenburg?

Ah, the others probably are too old or have too many pro minutes.

Thanks.
