Speaking of he and Swanson’s meaty OBP…Is it just me or is it underrated again? So much focus is on power and contact but the league OBP is .319 rn, was .312(!!) last year…

OBP was sacrificed at the altar of launch angle and exit velocity

Ok this board is confusing now. I saw a new post notification for the Seiya thread, went to it and there were no new posts since last October. Confused as hell so I went back again and now there are only posts from the last hour in this thread.

Maybe not in all cases, but is it a coincidence that the increase in k’s and drop in OBP started when launch angle Uber alles started?

K's started going up a long time ago, as soon as teams were all realizing the value of OBP,  generally working deeper counts, and the fact that an out is an out.  three true outcomes, Adam Dunn, etc.  it MAYBE was taken a bit too far (or maybe the playing field just leveled out because everyone was doing it).

a sort of course correction seems to be happening where (and i have no idea what the actual data says, so i'm talking out of my ass to a large degree here, to be clear) contact is being valued more and naturally OBP might be coming down as a result.

also, pitching is just insanely nasty now so that's another variable.

The use of science to improve pitching has progressed at a much faster pace than hitting. Guys can do stuff with a baseball now that they couldn't do before. Also, the use of data to position players has exploded. I think the launch angle stuff is a bit overblown. You want some guys to hit the ball in the air, but it's not the same for all players. It's just much much harder to get hits.

Run the board however you please, but leave the thread titling to the experts

I motion that each time he splits a thread, Beau is forced to title it "Guess what an idiot with administrator privileges did this time..." and the poster can change the title later.

Can I get a second?

I’ll be curious to see what a full season without the shift does to OBP numbers

What if we just did a whole sub-forum titled "Guess what an idiot with..."?

Okay, this made me laugh.

The reason I split this particular thread is because I’m going to start promoting the forum and individual threads more on social. I’m still setting up how exactly to do that but easily-digested, timely content is a necessity. And this seemed like a good test subject for that.

Glad you enjoyed it. Also, sorry I called you Beau. I'm at home sick today, and in my feverish state I was sure your name was Beau Beauchamp -- which I thought was terribly funny. You should consider a name change.

My middle name is Beauregard.

God, that’d be so embarrassing if true.

Solid dad joke

It's shocking to me how many of the posters on this board have gone from from angsty teens when they joined to full on cool dads now.
