Justin Steele on the mound again for the Cubs, taking on yet another season of an underwhelming Padres team. Yeesh, the talent level of the Padres versus their regular season record continues to be misaligned.

Clearly this statement cannot be true. The perception of their talent is what is misaligned. Regardless, awfully early to write them off.

Oh, I'm not writing them off in the slightest bit. I'd put them at no lower than 80% chance to make the postseason.

It's more of a perpetual issue with the Padres where they add more levels of ridiculous talent, yet have disappointed during the regular season for several years in a row.

which suggests that talent is over-rated to me.

Or mismanaged or both. but, yes, at the end of the day, the talent is what the numbers say it is.

I mean, they're 12-12 and just got back the guy who has put up 13.6 fWAR in 277 career games. April 24th is far from 'the end of the day'. There's a 38 point gap between their offensive BABIP and their defensive BABIP. Let's get a little bit deeper in the year before we like, start blaming the baseball manager of all things.

I think Brock's point was that they have underperformed for a couple years more than pointing out this year.

The Padres are going to start absolutely bludgeoning other teams soon.  You just cross your fingers and hope this collective funk lasts another three days or that we can win some games 8-6.  We're getting the back of their rotation, so the latter is a viable path to winning this series.

I'd love to win the first two games, because there's nothing especially flukey looking underneath the hood on Seth Lugo, he might just be legit.

Oh yeah, there's not much to read into this year - yet - but sitting at 12-12 isn't exactly a strong start. It's the kind of thing that happens to good baseball teams early in the season but it's not a ringing endorsement, either.

Since the lineup is posted, looks like Belli went on the paternity list. Congrats to him for a healthy baby girl. Hope Velasquez can stay hot in his absence

Hopefully Nelly hits and this weekend and never looks back so that when Bellinger comes back Torrens gets the axe.

We're now approaching a full calendar year of Steele being really horsefeathering good.  And honestly it feels like he's still getting better?

Curious who gets the 8th with Fulmer struggling right now.  Does Ross give Rucker his shot at setup duty?  Then close it with Hughes since the bottom half of the Padres order is pretty vulnerable to a lefty?

Yan Gomes is now hitting .309/.316/.582 on the season, and pitchers have an ERA under 3 when he's catching
