I don't generally care what Brian Kelly does with his time these days but if he beats Alabama while ND is likely getting waxed by Clemson in large part because of the gaping horsefeathers hole in the QB room he was responsible for, the takes will be unbearable, so Roll Tide.

This is literally the only weekend every season that I root for BAMA. Roll effing Tide.

Game of the Century in Athens this weekend.

It's weird looking for the Illinois game in the ranked teams section.

The real question is, will they be ranked in the CFP top 10 come Tuesday?

I'd figure probably not, but maybe? They're definitely behind Ohio State, Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan, Clemson, TCU and Alabama. So they're in the discussion after that with Oregon, USC, UCLA, Ole Miss, Kansas State, LSU, Utah, Oklahoma State, and Penn State. I'd probably put them just behind Oregon and USC, even with UCLA and Ole Miss, just ahead of the 2 loss teams.

The fluke loss to Indiana and the relatively weak schedule hurts them. It’s not that they’ve played a bunch of bad teams, it’s that they haven’t played any particularly good teams. The convincing win over Minnesota is still probably their best win of the year.

Illinois will get its chance. Beat Michigan on the road and the rankings will take care of themselves.

Here's my prediction:

1. Georgia

2. Tennessee

3. Ohio State

4. Michigan

5. TCU

6. Clemson

7. Alabama

8. Oregon

9. Ole Miss

10. USC

11. UCLA

12. Illinois

13. UNC

14. LSU

15. Kansas State

16. Penn State

I got bored after this. I could definitely see the committee putting Clemson or even TCU ahead of Michigan due to Michigan's NC but while it will mildly annoy me, it ultimately doesn't matter because Michigan's path (and Illinois) is pretty clear. The only way that Michigan has a shot at making it with a loss (IMO) is if they lose to Illinois, beat Ohio State and then avenge the Illinois loss in the championship (or to a lesser extent beat Purdue). Illinois has to win out and if they beat Michigan x2 or Michigan and Ohio State they should be close to a lock. Alabama could still slide in beating an undefeated UGA/Tenn in the SEC game, but hard to not select a team that lost the first week of the season and then beat 2 top 8 teams, one on the road and one at a neutral site.

I think Oregon gets punished more for that embarrassing loss to Georgia.

I've seen a lot of hype for Oregon the last 2 weeks. SP+ has Oregon 7th with the number 3 offense. You are right though that if it comes down to comparing 1 loss teams, getting absolutely demolished by a likely CFP team will hold them back.

You know how much I like doing this for college basketball, but here are blind comparisons for the 13 0 or 1 loss teams with a shot at the CFP right now (so LSU, K-State, PSU, etc are not included for this, sorry). This was put together for an Athletic article, so if you read that you know who the teams are but here anyway:

For me, team F is an easy #1, followed by K and M, and E #4. B seems far and away the worst profile of these teams, and J has the best profile of teams with a loss.

Auburn fired Harsin, to the shock of no one. He had a "my way or the highway" demeanor, which Auburn said it wanted after their last coach. Auburn will now be paying 3 coaches who no longer coach for them and one who will be coaching.

My wife works at one of the university satellite campuses and the craziness of the athletic program is mirrored in the administration. The place is a mess. It's unfortunate because there are a lot of good scholars working there.

The phrase "too many chiefs and not enough braves" applies to Auburn. Their high end boosters in the good ole' boy network are way too involved in the athletic program. Alabama was that way when Saban showed up and he basically kicked all the good ole boys out of practices and stuff and insulated the program from those types. He still took/takes their money of course, but he basically asked them if they'd rather win or would rather have "access". You see this with the guys from his coaching tree who learned from Saban: Smart at Georgia, Kiffin at Ole Miss, and Sark at Texas all have closed programs at the moment. Access is extremely limited.

Well Michigan is getting docked for their weak NC schedule even though Clemson has played Furman and Louisiana Tech for their NC games which is just as bad if not worse. Michigan has also played 3 teams that by SP+ are better than the best team Clemson has played. Michigan also crushes them on computer metrics and has beaten every team on their schedule by 2+ scores (except Maryland who scored a prevent TD when the game was already over), while Clemson has 3 wins of 6 points or less (including 1 in 2OT).

Blah blah blah it doesn't matter ultimately, but Clemson pisses me off because there really isn't a ton of things you can point to where Clemson is ahead of Michigan.

Clemson isn't very good and will likely lose before the ACC Championship game

Just looking at the rankings it seems like the committee doesn't think the B1G or the ACC are any good, so yeah the Michigan/Clemson thing seems odd given that context.

I'm still confused by the Penn State thing given their best accomplishment so far was basically doing what Notre Dame did against Ohio State (hang in just long enough to get sat on in the end). But whatever, as usual this will all sort itself out and these weekly shows are dumb.

Notre Dame is a smaller underdog Saturday (+4) than they were in the 2020 version of this game despite a hilariously huge downgrade at the most important position since then, so it seems like Vegas doesn't think much of Clemson.

I mean, #5-15 are meaningless at the end, so it doesn't really matter

I was amazed at how people reacted around ND when Kelly left, so I'm routing for him to win in LSU. He's a red-ass kind of guy, but he fixed ND to probably the greatest extent possible following their comedy of errors in hiring coaches since Lou Holtz. It's kind of an experiment to see if Kelly is a good enough coach to win in a rich recruiting environment instead of ND.

He’s certainly recruiting well, especially on the OL. It remains to be seen if he can break the cycle of mediocre LSU QB play , outside of Burrow, of course.

If you had to live around LSU fans, you would not be rooting for LSU. The think everyone in the SEC is irrelevant outside of them and BAMA.
