Got to remember that the Cubs can pay Dubois the minimum. If he starts or platoons, this frees up a ton of cash for the Cubs to sign a closer, ss or a 2b.

If the Cubs can get .265 and 25HRs for the minimum, that may be better than .280 and 30 HRs for $7 million as long as the Cubs use the savings in a bigger need area.

How is Grieve not bad?

Grieve was an AllStar in '98. He put up solid numbers in Oakland and TB, before losing his mind a few years ago. Dont know if he had an injury or such, but clearly a drop from 25 HRs on Average to 10 is not good. I just hope he wasnt in the Spinach juice.

So by your theory Dubois is similar to the 98 Grieve, or the 04 Grieve? Just wanna know so when I give you grief about this prediction later next season, I'm using the right material...

You know Dusty noticed that bomb - Dubois pretty much guaranteed himself a long look with that great game.

Booya!

i certainly hope so

I havent been wrong yet. SPS and I went way out on the ledge and predicted that the Cubs wouldnt make the playoffs this year before the season started. My CP predictions are well known, and CP didnt make any of those either. So I am 2-2 so far. :P

I think that DuBois will be a little less talented than the 98 Grieve.

what were your corey predictions?

what were your corey predictions?

Welcome back to Earth.

I said (and please Raw feel free to correct me  ) No more than .285/.330; 20 to 25 HRs; and less than .250 RISP.

I did miss the record though. I thought the Cubs would go 78-94 this year and keep the streak alive at 33. I did predict 3rd place accurately however, behind the Astros and Cards.

But what about my awesome prediction that you would be as negative as possible and suck as much fun out of following the Cubs as you could?

He's looking good today but I sure would be curious to see how he did in a critical game down the stretch instead of in a game that is meaningless.

I would like to have found out how he did in crucial games, as opposed to Jose Macias.

Yup. You really have to wonder if the Cubs couldn't have won a few more games if Dubois had gotten all the OF playing time that went to Macias and Goodwin. As long as we have Dusty Baker managing we'll have "what ifs" like this at the end of the season.

Is your anti-Baker bias that strong? Or did you miss the games between late May - late August when our bullpen blew many, many, many 6th, 7th and 8th inning leads. I hated Macias and Goodwin playing, too, but Dubois playing didn't cost us nearly the number of games as our bullpen did. It would've been nice if Hendry would've improved a glaring weakness we had for 3/4 of the season - the bullpen.

Why is it that everytime somebody points out a negative about Baker, you jump in with a Hendry comment? Do you not agree with what that person wrote, that Dusty is known for playing undeserving old players often at the detriment of the team? Isn't it possible that both Hendry's failures to fill all the holes and Dusty's failure to manager a decent game led to the demise? What is it about Dusty that makes you feel so strongly about deflecting criticism away from him?

I like Dubois, but I think a Grieveesque production would be pretty good. If this guy hit 40 home runs it's be a real surprise is all I'm saying, but as a full time 30 home runs is reasonable with his power.

Hey, Grieve was a good player befor he got hurt/got off roids/got not very good.

Obviously you havent been a Cub fan long. I am 3rd generation. After the first generation or so, all hope disappears. The 2nd generation brings bitter disappointment and disillusionment. With the 3rd generation comes comedy, acceptance, and understanding the art form. It isnt IF the Cubs will fail so much, as how they will do it. They always amaze and break new ground in this area. Like watching Opera. Great singing and fine music, but the really good part is in the intangible area.

Now dont get me wrong, I enjoy a good Cubs victory just like everyone else. I just try to avoid the suicidal lows associated with any kind of hope whatsoever. The "safe" money on the Cubs will always follow Murphy's Law. We were doomed when the first expert picked us to win it all this year.

Pessimistic? Perhaps, but Realistic.

Life is pain; anyone who tells you different is trying to sell you something.

Makes you 2-0 by my count.

Obviously you're around 2/3 since your math is a little off ;)

I guess we're just different. As soon as I'm half as negative as you, and do nothing but derive pain from the Cubs, I'll stop being a fan. I don't understand why anyone would want to follow the team if it wasn't fun.

I hear ya and am in agreeance with ya, Tree. I really don't know how some of the more negative posters here survive and how they can take rooting for the Cubs if it makes them so negative, etc.

I would say a big reason would be that obviously the player has to WANT to go to the team. I would say that would make it diificult to sign most of them. Not impossible, just difficult. In addition, none of them would put butts in the seats like Sosa would. More butts equals more money equals more revenue equals better teams equals more butts equals.............you get the idea.

What percentage of the three million people who walked through the turnstiles at Wrigley Field this year went to see Sammy Sosa? My guess is less that 10%. And I think I'm being pretty generous. I went to eight games this year (two more at Miller Park and a couple during spring training, too!). I went to see the team, not him. Five years ago I would have answered differently. But not now.

Edited for spelling.

I was at Shea when the Cubs played, and I would guess anywhere from 3-5% of the people there showed up at least partially because Sammy was in town.

From Rick Morrissey's column on 10/6/04:

When the Cubs played at Shea Stadium toward the end of this season (and folded like origami), fans greeted Sosa warmly, not zealously.

Affirmation, baby!

(I miss Tony Kornheiser's show on ESPN radio).

jason dubois, might he be the next julio zueleta. remember boys every one hits in the pcl, didn't murray and 38 year old treinadad hubbard hit over three hundred, be careful what you wish for, if he is the one who replaces alou i fear the dissapointment will be profound. give me a left handed hitter to fullfill that spot. but i don't think you have to worry i see no mention anywhere but here that the cubs hold

him in high regards.

I would like to see Dubois in LF next season. However, I do not see it happening. From a production standpoint, he is quite capable of putting up a .260ish, 25ish, 80ish, .800+ OPS for an entire season. Financially, that is a bargain.

The fact that Baker is predisposed to putting a rookie on a ridiculously short leash in favor of an unproductive veteran would probably lean Hendry in another direction. If I were GM, I would much rather pay somebody like Drew or Beltran to play in my OF then see somebody like Macias score a majority of the AB's. How scary is that?

Bottom line, I think Hendry goes after a FA outfielder.

Heh, thought it might be fun to bump this after Jason saved the day with his 3 run blast. If he keeps slugging the ball like he is, he's going to drive a lot of balls out of Wrigley when the winds blowing out.

You will learn to understand the first time you realize you want to root for another team and discover you can't. That's when the little light will go on above your head: being a Cub fan may have been a choice long ago, but now it's a death-grip, love-hate, addiction that can never be cured.

I know this is an old thread, but i seriously, seriously hate the old guard of Cub fans that pull the "you're just a kid, you don't know pain, I'm a third generation Cub fan."

Guess what, I'm 23, and I'm a third generation Cub fan too. I die a little bit everything we suck. You aren't special just because you're old.
